Bugger, just tried to update the firmware via ethernet, well it has never worked before so I thought I would try and well it went through until, I checked back with the unit and the pic on the TV was snowy. Odd I thought. It said step 4/4. It would not turn off using the power button on the front and thus I pulled out the mains power. I phoned toshiba and tried un plugging for 3 mins to reset but to no avail. All that happens is that it says welcome on the front panel and that is it!

Is there anyway that I can unbrick it via software or what have you....pleas tell me its not dead....any help will be most appreciated....Thanks

I haven't updated mine in awhile, so I cant remember all the steps. But I think you have to wait until that "4/4" is done also. Never a good idea to unplug something while the FW is being updated. It specifically says that in the manual and while your updating! Sounds like you bricked it to me. I'd check around Google - might have better luck there.

I got to the part of the update that said 4/4 and followed all of the instuctions (updated my samsung bluray at the same time no problem) and the player did not want to cooperate so thus my only option was to turn it off. I have spent hours looking over google to no avail so I thought that someone might know here. I took the player to the store where I got it last night and they are going to fix it and as well as that toshiba said they would exchange it no problems, so not all doom and gloom hats off to the techs at toshiba very helpful. However it would still be nice to know how to unbrick it as I am too much of a curious fellow to not try another firmware update.....Too much of it it aint broke break it and fix it kinda guy....a pain but true!!!!!

I tried to help out, and did a search on this issue, and bad news, this is what I found:

DO NOT UNPLUG, TURN OFF, OR USE ANY OTHER FEATURE OF YOUR PLAYER DURING THE FIRMWARE UPDATE PROCESS. Doing so will cause the writing of the firmware update to the player to be halted and the player may no longer operate properly. If the player stops working, please contact Toshiba Customer Solutions at 1-800-319-6684 or HD-DVD Concierge at 1-888-MY HD DVD (1-888-694-3383) .

One last thing you could try to repair your player, is to download the iso file for the firmware, burn it to a CD, then turn on your player and insert the CD containing the firmware. Keep your fingers crossed and hope it will recognize the CD and update the firmware.

Yikes indyjase, I hope you didn't void your warranty by taking it apart?

Sometimes holding down the power button will shut off and reset the player. Then you can try to update again as Rocco96 suggested. AVS forum has instructions on how to "hexedit" to go to former firmware.

When updating, never shut off the player, it's suppose to do it on it's own after a successful update. The last step takes forever, do something else and let it do it's thing.
