Cool.. It's all ticking along over here..

With uni you want to decide what you want to do, then apply on the basis of that. Some are better than others in certain subjects... and then how do you intend to support yourself.. If you need cheap housing in the second year and work the 2 tend to conflict.. because cheap places to live don't tend to have any jobs ;) I have inside info about UK unis and how to get the lowdown from the horses mouth so to speak... probably a similar method can be used for other countries.

If i go to a Uni that isnt one of the best in the UK....will anywhere take me when it comes to getting a job?

They don't look at which uni dished out the papers.. they just look at what you have (and I have way too many to get employment)

When you decide on your course a good plan is to get in toush with the students' union at the respective uni's and get the lowdown on course quality and availability of housing and stuff. East Anglia Area NUS are a good starting point to get some contacts.. I believe they are based at Norwich and traditionally are known as movers and shakers in the student movement.

start here http://www.nus.org.uk/en/Students-Unions/ and grab a feel of what is going on.. no sales pitch and generally no BS from the organisation..

Make contact with a few on your hotlist and request info about things you feel are relevant. like "is the uni accommodation up to scratch and safe, or is it like Leeds used to be (don't say that.. it was many many years ago and they sorted it).. a collection of old ratty houses scattered through slum districts". "Is it a long way from the town.. what is public transport like". "does the course require evening classes which may mean traveling at night". "how about part time work to support myself.. is there any". that kind of stuff.. Lots of places seem fine on a day out in summer to visit the campus.. only to find they turn into Beirut at night.. Only the students who live there can really give you those answers so don't be afraid to ask.

I was involved more years ago than I care to remember.. I was president of a SU during the bad times around the 97 election.. No Fees campaign and all that... There will be higher staff who will still shudder if they heard my name come up in conversation... hehehe.. so better leave that alone eh?

Dude, your a legend. Everything you just said has actually helped me alot :-)

And thanks for telling me it doesnt matter where you go...just the actual papers that matters.

Because im thinking of just going all out and going to manchester or liverpool....for the parties...as opposed to going to one of the top 10 in the Uk for economics/PPE.

What you think?

Liverpool has 2 great uni's.. John Moores seems the more academic of the pair, but both are central. If you prefer somewhere a little more not big city ..because scouseland central can be a bit intimidating if you haven't done big city on your own before there is Edge Hill. Green and leafy.. very nice with an awesome academic record.

Manchester.. You know you have 2 there as well? I'm not keen on manc.. It becomes pretty threatening after dark where Liverpool always seems safer. Half the trouble with Manchester is the locations.. The main Uni campus is right on the edge of what was Moss Side.. Cambridge Street crack central.. and it feels like a long way out of the city but still in there if you know what I mean. Both Manchester Uni's are quite science/technology oriented which is understandable with the citys history of science and engineering.

Are you really sure you want to do "T'North"? It's grim up here....

UCL in Preston is very good, and Preston while a city isn't as big or as rough.... It's quite a new Uni.. with modern facilities from what I remember.

I went to Leeds.. which though a great uni and good student nightlife isn't somewhere I would recommend for everybody. Housing in the second year in particular is hard.
Overall on balance .. If they offer the courses you require try John Moores in Liverpool and if you feel brave then go for Manchester... Whatever you do.. if you aren't a city kid don't do Salford or Bradford.. and god forbid.. Bolton.

I have a contact at Liverpool.. It's just up the rails from me.. I will ask them what the score there is with housing and work.. Think they are in year 2 now.

Thank you varnull, id appreciate that :-D

Just for the record though...i think you are confused/mistaken...john moores is the lesser academic of the two...
