It seems every guide i see says to get the VIA VT6421A sata controller...
why can't i use my motherboards built in sata? so my HD and dvd arn't on the same controller as the xbox drive? or something else? is it 100% needed to have the VIA VT6421A?

but know, unless you are lucky enough to have a compatible motherboard, you have to get the via card.
