Hey all,

Wondering if you can possibly help me with formatting my PSP memory stick.
I started off with PSP 2.0, which i proceeded to downgrade to 1.5. I was at the 1.5 stage and wanted to upgrade to 4.01 M33 when I realised my 32mb card wouldn't hold any of the upgrade files. So I went and bought a Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo 4GB card from Harvey Norman.

I put this card into my psp and it wanted me to upgrade to 2.00 before playing any of my umds, so i did so thinking I could just go back to 1.5 when needed.

I formatted my 4gb ms in the psp by going to system settings, but when I connect it to the computer it won't recognise it and asks me to format the drive?

EDIT: I just put the card into my card reader using the card adapter and it wouldnt read at all. I put the card in the card reader WITHOUT the adapter and i managed to get up the folder with the PSP folders etc. BUT now everytime I try to copy something to it it is "write protected". There is no slide or lock on it either..

any help would be greatly appreciated! I need this urgently.

If you are able to put your mem stick into your psp and connect it to the pc via usb and have it register as being plugged into your pc you're good.

When it asks to format it, do so. Or go into "My Computer" and look for the new drive that pops in there.

Right click on the drive and go down to format. It should show as roughly 3.8gig or so (you'll never get the full amount. My 2gig shows up as 1.9gig. This is normal.)

Go down to the file system drop down menu and choose FAT32.

Make sure Quick Format isn't checked.

Click format. Let me know if that solved your problem.

You know I give you the mad, phat, superfly, stupid-dope, dumb-ass, retarded, bomb-sh*t props!
What else do you want from me!?!

Thanks for the reply, really appreciate this!

When I put the card into the PSP and connect it via USB Cable it comes up as E:Drive but when I click on it it asks me to format it. When I put the card directly into the card reader and connect it to the computer the folder pops up with the PSP folders etc inside, but I can't copy/paste/delete anything in it because it is 'write protected'?

When I do try and format it on the computer it only gives me the option of selecting '1.6GB' and nothing near 3.80GB. When my memory card is in the psp, I scroll across Photos/Music/Game etc and it says there is like 3880mb free.

Any ideas?

My question is while the card is in the psp and it's connected to the computer via usb is it coming up near the 4gig range. (Make sure you activate the connection. Not insulting your intelligence, just making sure I cover my basis).

Regardless of the size are you able to format it? Your goal is to try and get the psp to recognize it in the system settings > format memory stick menu so you can do the formatting from there.

I've heard of the psp having problems with sticks over 2gig and am wondering if this is what they're talking about.

Also, being you don't have anything on there I'd be trying any format option you have regardless of how it's done. Can't hurt anything till you have something worth losing on there.

Just so you know the only interface I've ever had to do with my psp is via the usb connection. And it's only been with a 2gig card. I don't have a card reader on my desktop and my sony laptop has been out of commission since i got my psp. So all experience i have with it is coming strictly from a psp to usb to pc scenario.

Get back to me on this and in the mean time I'll do some research on card sizes and what the "over 4 gig problem" was.

Cheers.

seems almost like your windows drivers are outdated since it isnt supporting it as a 4gb i have the same problem with my card reader and there are no updates to fix mine; so i just use it in my psp but you could try to use a windows program like http://dl.qj.net/PSP-Pandora-Deluxe-v2.4...24477/catid/151 to format the memory stick again again you may even have to update your pc psp usb drivers check here for help on that http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/446570
also check this see if your card support magicgate or not because this can cause speed and compatibility problems just goto photo/music/video or game and press triangle on memory stick and then information to see if its a fake stick or not

@NeonMako:

My computer only asks to format the E Drive when I connect the PSP via the USB Cable. However with my 32mb and 1gb memory card it works perfectly when in the psp and connected to computer via usb cable. And when it does ask to format it, I click ok but it only lets me select 1.6GB and thats it, no options that are less or higher. I then have the FAT and FAT32 option. I can take a screenshot if you like?

I bought two 4GB cards that do this. I tried formatting one on the PC by selecting the 1.6GB option and 'FAT' option (i read somewhere I shouldnt do FAT32) and unchecked quick format and tried it. Once successfully formated, I could open the card on the PC but there were no folders in it, and when I checked the size on the PC it said it was only 1.something GB's. I proceeded to put this card in my PSP where it said I had 3845MBs?

Thanks alot for your help, I've searched for hours and can't find much at all.

@ShaggyZE

Thanks for your ideas, I haven't read about these options yet and maybe I'll give them a try! And yes my card is a magicgate card, and it is genuine as it is from Harvey Norman. Would by drivers be outdated even if they work for 1GB and 32mb memory sticks of the same brand (using same PSP and card reader technique)?

THANKS ALL FOR YOUR HELP.

yea as for your card reader it may have been made around the time as mine when 4gb memory sticks werent supported so there may be a firmware update to make them compatible so that it can do a full 4gb format but your psp usb drivers probably isnt the problem since it comes up as a mass storage device just it comes up write protected so its most likely the formating thats the problem and since the psp says everything is fine with the stick and the format then it seems to be just a problem with communicating with the pc so try formatting with another program or i would even try it on another computer and see if its write protected there and if thats the case it prolly is your windows psp usb drivers not communicating correctly might even be your usb cable causing the problem.

i was looking at other threads and came across something else that i didnt think about before that could be casing you problems...
"IMPORTANT*
NOTE:
1. Please FORMATE cards with PSP before use the card.(DO NOT FORMATE by PC)
2. Most of card readers DO NOT support high capacity Memory Stick (Duo) memory cards. Please use USB cable to transfer from PSP or SONY products to PC or other device.
3. For customers using PSP® system software version 2.80 or earlier:
PSP® systems with system software version 2.80 or earlier do not correctly recognize high-capacity Memory Stick PRO Duo? with more than 4 GB of free (recordable) memory space. Please update"

@ShaggyZE 1st Post:

So your saying maybe there is a firmware update for my external card reader? The USB Cable I use works for the other memory cards in the PSP so I don't think it would be that. The card reader I do have is old, but that still doesn't explain why it isnt showing up when I connect the PSP to the computer.

@2nd Post:

Thats some awesome information. I did format the card with the PSP first I made sure of that, and it does say that there is 3845MB free space on it, its just the process of getting the computer to read the card when connected to the PSP.

Maybe I should upgrade my 2.00 to something higher and try reformatting it using the PSP?

Thanks for your quick replies, I'm going away in 2 days and am trying to get this sorte.

yea i would try updating the firmware of either your card reader or psp since both are old and try formating again so if you have a magic memory stick and pandora battery that would make it easy and there are steps you have when upgrading firmwares like i'm pretty sure you cant go from 2.80 to 5.00 so it may be a long process to get to the newest psp custom firmware.
i gave you a link earlier for formatting and making the magic memory stick and as for the pandora battery i belive you need cfw 3.xx or higher to do it but here is a tutorial http://forums.qj.net/showthread.php?t=138307

@ KRS25
God there's like 100 different things going through my mind to ask you...from psp to mem stick to windows specs.

I want to make sure we're on the same page.
You're able to:
-format the thing in windows (regardless of size)
-disconnect the psp from the pc
-go to your psp system settings
-format memory stick and successfully format it from there?
*note*(formatting it from the psp is what will create your folders)

If you're able to format it on your PSP then go to "Photo" in your menu and down to "Memory Stick". With memory stick highlighted you can hit Triangle and bring up the options for the mem stick.
Go to Information.
Does your user capacity say 3.7+ gig (not sure what the exact number is but I would GUESS around 3.89 gig or so).
Also free space should be damn near the same amount and MagicGate should be supported.

If all of those check out and you reconnect the psp to windows via USB and still get the format pop up, then your PC is the problem (most likely a USB related issue).

If you don't get the format pop up when u do a USB connect from PSP to PC, but you DO get the pop up when you use your card reader, then most likely your card readers drivers need to be updated.

At that point I would suggest checking your device manager by:
For win XP:
-right clicking on "My Computer"
-properties
-When the system properties box comes up, go to the hardware tab
-click device manager.

For vista:
-Go to control pannel
-double click the System icon
-choose the Hardware tab
-click Device Manager

If you have any yellow question marks with the words USB in them that might be your problem.

Your other option is to determine the brand and if possible the type/model of the card reader you have. Check on the sides and underneath if its an external. If it's an internal then consult the computer's brand name's website (aka Dell, HP, Etc...)

After you locate the driver for your card reader install it. It should be a simple executable.

If this doesn't work, PM me and I'll arrange for more focused assistance via chat/phone/remote assistance.

Cheers.

PROBLEM SOLVED!

Finally!

Ok after hours of playing around with it here is what I did.

I have 2 PSPs, a 32mb card, 1gb card and 2 4gb cards. My comp wouldnt recognise the 4gb cards whilst connected via psp or through external card reader. I was running a 2.0 firmware at the time.

So I put in my 32mb card into my PSP, and followed steps to downgrade my PSP to 1.50 firmware using eboot and MPHDowngrader (with the aim of upgrading to 4.01 M33.
After successfully downgrading to 1.50, i found out my 32mb card was too small to fit the files needed to upgrade to 4.01 M33.
So I then put in my 1GB card and copied the files onto it, and proceeded to upgrade to 4.01 M33.
One I had successfully upgraded to 4.01 M33, I put in my 4GB card and formatted the card using the PSP. I then connected it to the computer via USB cable and there it was!

VERY HAPPY right now, thanks to ShaggyZE and NeonMako you two have been huge helps and are credits to this forum! Thanks for your help once again, definitely will recommend people to this site in the future.

good job, im running on 5.00 m33-2 right now just so i can download and buy games over wifi but im missing cxmb and all the nice themes and gameboots since they dont have them for 5.00 yet so if you want to check out the PSN Store you should upgrade to 5.00 if not stick to 4.01 and enjoy all the homebrew that is still working with it like cxmb.
