I need to install ffdshow and I have some questions about it.

I have no idea which version I should be installing. Some websites indicate there is a MMX (generic?) only version and a SSE (ICL10?) only version. Then some websites don't say anything about MMX or SSE versions. It's very confusing. My computer is a seven year old Pentium 4. I'm assuming it supports SSE but for all I know it could be disabled in BIOS, in which case I'd really rather not try to enable it.

According to the tutorials, during the installation/setup it asks about the components to be installed. What is VFW interface and AviSynth scripts serving? Do I really need those?

Then there's the part about the additional tasks. Can things I select or deselect there be changed later in the settings? For example, it asks which video formats I want it to decode, if I only choose MPEG 4, can I go back later and select FLV1?

Then under Program Compatibility it lists applications with the option of "use ffdshow only in the following applications", what does that mean and what if I don't want ffdshow to be used with any applications? Or maybe I'm misinterpreting what this means?

The only reason I even need to install ffdshow is to watch mp4 files. I'm looking for a program that takes up little disk space and uses little RAM. I was told that using ffdshow with Media Player Classic would be best.

Trying to figure out all this stuff on my own is frustrating the heck out of me. I've been researching this stuff for hours. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it.

You could save yourself a whole load of hassle and install the K-Lite Mega codec pack - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_...c_pack_full.cfm

I've been using it for years without problem.
