The manual for your Philips player is here - http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/d/dvp30..._75_pss_aen.pdf

Extract from the manual -
Quote:
Playable Discs
Your DVD Player will play:
– Digital Video Discs (DVDs)
– Video CDs (VCDs)
Super Video CDs (SVCDs)
– Digital Video Discs +
Recordable[Rewritable] (DVD+R[W])
– Compact Discs (CDs)
MP3 discs, picture (Kodak, JPEG) files on CD-R(W).
WMA files on CD-R(W).

It may not be possible to play CD-R/RW or DVD-R/RW in all cases due to the type of disc or condition of the recording.

So.. it states that +RW are supported and seems to suggests that some -RW might be supported. It seems those particular Verbatim -RW won't work.

Many dvd players do not support any rw disks at all... Because DVD Forum don't actually recognise (and never will) the rewritable format. It's down to individual manufacturers.. -rw is a very unusual format anyway. I don't see many players which do support it.

Yeah i deliberately chose a recorder that would use RW disks, though these days i don't use it very much (an expensive Panasonic) due to lack of a rooftop or wall-sided tv aerial (i'm certainly not brave/stupid enough to climb up the side of a Victorian house, no parachute!) though it's mostly due to there not being that much on that's worthy of recording.
