I popped open my xbox earlier today, and found the feared lite-on drive. I felt like crying.
The last hope I have is a friend who would be willing to trade xbox's with me for this good cause. The only thing is he got his back from repair about two months ago. Think there is a lite-on in it also?
He's agreed to let me come over and void his warranty ( I'm going to give him a game or two to play ). If it is anything other than lite-on, we're going to trade consoles - and I should be on my way to a modded xbox by the end of the week. I've got a sata card in the mail, a pack of 20 dual layer discs, and a 2gb flash drive.

No need to void the warranty. Just remove the faceplate. Look in the hole on the right side under the dvd drive. If you see white wires, it's a Benq. If they're yellow, it's a Lite On.
Also, even if you do open the console, there's no need to waste the warranty sticker. It can be saved and only takes 5 minutes. All you need is a hairdryer. Just Google it or look on Youtube.
I just spoke to another friend, he got his xbox in May (has the receipt)
He's willing to trade his (The wires inside are red and white) for my arcade version & 20$.
Is this a good deal? Considering I already have everything I need to haxorfy it coming in the mail.. and the ability to burn it ( I think - what does that need other than a dual layer burner and dual layer discs? )
If it was bought new in may i would certainly hope it is not a hitachi, unless it fell off the back of a truck and sat for 2 years. Where did he get it from? Most likely a benq, possibly a samsung. Check the manf. date on the back and then check online there is a site that has dates and drives.
is it possible to buy a replacement drive that isn't a lite-on and use it with a Xbox 360 that came with a Lite-on drive? or is the mother board not compatible?
The only problem with this is, I don't like the fact that it's not as new as mine. But the warranty is still in place ( and mine isn't) So hopefully I can get it open without voiding the warranty.
