Obviously later updates have more core functionality, that is, they can do more by default than other firmwares.

However, most homebrew applications, tools, addons etc. are designed for the current firmware at the time of creation, which may not be the latest one.

Simply enough, if you don't plan on using lots of custom applications, then it's a clear improvement to move up to the latest firmware.

However, if you DO plan on customizing your PSP, that may not be the case. Wait for whatever customizations you want to make the transition to the new firmware.

most of the best plugins and homebrews either already work on 5.00 or have already been upgraded to work within the last few days.
