Hiya, first post here, kinda upset it has to be in such bad light!

Anywho, I'm having a teeny problem of my PS3 wroks jsut fine etc but the Blu-Ray drive beats the living carpe-diem out of itself if I put a disc in it or eject them! Any disc, no matter what it is, I will put it in and it will go "CLACK CLACK CLACK CLACK CLACK CRACK CRACK CLACK CLRACK", The first time I heard it I was hitting that eject button like crazy!
Expecting to recieve nothing but shards of my movie, yes it was truely that loud and the entire PS3 shook with the cracking noises, to my surprise a completely unscuffed, scratched, scathed in any form CD comes out after more clacking and cracking from the eject...
Phones Sony's Tech support, useless as always and won't even let me call a service shop to ask them what they will do, or.. Anything, the lady went so far as to, actually I'll post the snippet from the conversation.
Now more about the very angry Blu Ray Drive. It will stop clacking maniacally after a few seconds, and just sit in silence.. Dead Silence, I can barely hear the fan although I don't know if thats just me being paranoid.. If I eject the disk it goes CLACK CLACK CLACK again for a few seconds.. Disc comes out.
Software wise, its immaculate, it runs any games I have on the hard drive, it plays music, I copied all the data I could (Some games don't like you copying the data you worked so hard to save, go figure) and can go online, asked a couple people what was going on.. Sent a nasty e-mail to Sony's Tech support, pretty normal every day experience.

I have no idea what to do, its a 60GB model, I don't have my receipt anymore so I went ahead and ripped the sticker off because Sony already will do whatever it can to not pay up in Warranty. Unfortunately I have NOTHING long enough in a Torx head to reach it and all my flats are too skinny and skip which will strip the bugger if I keep trying..
This PS3 has never been;

Dropped, Kicked, Shook, Exposed to Water, Exposed to Direct Sunlight, Overheating, Freezing, Theaten Radiation Levels, Scientologists or anything of the like. I really really want help, I know its the blu Ray Drive, but I don't know what I can do, I've read stuff saying send it to Sony for 150 insane dollars, and then I've heard they don't even send you back your model anyways!
If I can pull it apart, does this sound like its repairable? Does anyone know exactly what could have happened or roughly? Can I replace it with -any- blue ray drive for a PS3, and still have all the backwards compatibility of the 60gb model?

Thanks for your time, now for some sony Tech Support humor!

"A hundred and fifty dollars on a five hundred dollar machine for a factory defect? Are you serious?"
"Yes.."
"Well is there any way I can talk to a tech ask them what is wrong with it and such?"
"No."
"Come on, there has to be a number."
"No, there isn't."
"You're telling me they don't have a single phone in the repair shop? I find that pretty damn hard to believe"
"No, they don't have any..."
".... So what happens when I pay this 150 dollars?"
"Well after you ship it to us we take it in"
"And then I can talk to the people in the repair shop about the problem?"
"Yes."
"On the phone?"
"... We give you the information.. After you pay the.. We will, well give you the information."
"This is insane, thank you for your time".

Welcome to the forums!

Sounds like you need to re-align your drive, it's likely a gear has popped off or has worn down to such a point as it won't work anymore. The other big reason for clackity clacks is the metal bar on the underside of the blue ray drive popping off one of the large black rails which move the laser assembly up and down.

As far as getting that Torx bolt off, keep trying. You might have to invest in a $9.99 cheap-o tool kit from a dollar store that has Torx bits. I don't recall the exact size of the bolt but I would imagine it's a T-20 or T-25. Most people are able to get the bolt out without the 'special' hole in the middle of the bit. It's usually in there pretty tight (loc-tite maybe?), but once you break it loose it'll be easy.

In the thread "Blue Ray Drive Dead" there is a link to how to re-align the drive mechanisms. It's actually quite easy once you get the drive apart.

Good luck!
