Although I have burned films and audio to discs for some years I have never attempted to burn a game to disc. I understand I need a "Dual Layer" Dvd burner and special discs 8.5gb capacity, can anyone give me any specific instructions as to how I go about this please

My weapon of choice is Alcohol 120%. This program is not a freebie..sorry. However it does offer a trial period so you can road test the features. Backing up your games is often a very tricky process, and is often fraught with errors.
The one thing I can suggest to you is to look through the games forums here at AD, and see what you find. (use the search function)
If you have a DVD/R/W drive, then all will come, as you have what is needed.

As a starter, you could post the name of the game you intend on backing up, and we/I can point you in the right direction, as far as Alcohol or otherwise is concerned.

Please note that while a pc game is often the most difficult to copy, a console game will require a chip or similar to play.

Cheers.

Thank you for the reply "Onya" I can download full x-box 360 games from a site on the net direct to my pc. The console I use is already chipped. It is transferring them from my pc to disc that concerns me, I must confess to being totally ignorant concerning the discs and burner I use. One helpfull person told me I need special 8.5gb discs and a "Dual -Layer " burner, he also directed me to afterdawn but after spending some hours searching the site I have yet to find "Burning X-Box 360 games from PC to disc for Dummies" (The games are already in a playable format when downloaded so I do not need to put them through Alcohol 120 or Winrar all I need to find out is :- Do I need special DVD discs ? and Do I need a Dual-layer Burner ? Thanks again for your help in this I appreciate talking to "Dummies" is not your favourite pastime lol

Don't be too hard on yourself, we all start somewhere. :)
So..onto the disc situation. If the game is written to CD, then a CD is used but if a DVD is called for then an ordinary single layer disc (dvd-5) is often what's required. All burner drives are dual layer (dvd-9) capable. If your burner supports the ability to booktype, then all the better. Choose a decent media blank like Verbatim and burn at HALF the rated speed. 16X = 8X burn speed or less etc. The next issue would be burning software. If you have success with your current s/ware, then I see no reason to change at this point. Having said that, you could try ImgBurn. This is a freeware app that is available here at AfterDawn, from the downloads tab at the top of the page.
ImgBurn enjoys a very good rep here and deservedly so. It's free, it's stable and less 'bloated' than others. It also has considerable help topics via the makers website. Check it out, you'll be surprised.

One last comment, careful with your downloads buddy, check absolutely everything with your antivirus software. It's very very easy to get net nasties from "these" kind of downloads.
Hope I helped out some.

Cheers.

Thanks once again "Onya" that is exactly the information I have been looking for. I now know what I require. As for your comments regarding IMGBURN I,m one step ahead of you as I downloaded it first time on Afterdawn, have,nt quite worked the bugs out yet but it seems easy enough. I,m impressed with afterdawn, its nice to find so much info on one site and even better to find polite, helpful people running it. I will definitely reccomend to everyone I know with a PC.

Thanks again for your help.

And to think you called yourself a dummie! Looks like you made a very smart choice with ImgBurn from the get go. Anyways, glad to help out.

Cheers.

RE: Argo23 comment that her console is already chipped. How would I be able to tell if my console is chipped as well? Also, I use CloneDVD for my burning software, would this work for Xbox 360?

Thanks.

The first part of your question I can answer, You would have bought the x-Box second-hand and been told by the seller it had been chipped, otherwise you would have paid someone (approx £60 to have it chipped. You do of course realise that this is highly illegal as it allows you to play "copied" games on your x-box. However, should you wish to go online you will not be able to use copied games, you must use originals (or so I have been told). As for the second part of your question I am still struggling to get my head around this too, although to be fair, I have,nt devoted much time trying

Just for future reference here's a guide for burning XBox 360 games and yep you'll need dual layer discs:

@pictougal
No you can't use CloneDVD for that - the slysoft product that would work is CloneCD (the name is a bit miss leading). But why buy something when ImgBurn is free and good.

edit: typo
