Hi, I just brought a new wii :)

I've been reading up on the past several days about hacks for the wii and so far it's been pretty overwhelming, separating old hacks vs new hacks and just so many things that people say but later are antagonized by other people. I'm hoping that you guys can answer these questions for a wii noobie like myself.

1) Some people say only use DVD-R disc in your Wii because the +R variety will ruin the Wii's laser. What types of discs should I use for backups?

2) The main question: What hack should I use for my Wii to play backup games?
Should I get a modchip? (if so, which one? I heard Wiikey2 w/ wiiclip is good, easy to install and well-priced.)
Or just go buy the Zelda: Twilight Princess game and use Backuploader or so?

Regarding this matter, I don't want to spend too much money, but I also don't want to ruined my wii (that's why I thought about the wiiclip because I broke my PS2 trying to solder a DMS4).

I know that the wii has firmware updates so I'm worried that if I use the hacks, Nintendo will one day make a forced-updated that could brick the wii. I heard reports of the firmware 3.0 bricking wii's that had chips in them but wasn't sure if those wii's were ever fixed.

Based on the expertises of you experience Wii moders, what modding method do you recommend for me? Thanks in advance

At this time the better choice would be a Modchip. It pretty much has 100% compatibility with game disc (of your region). The Backup loader is making strides but it still falls short compared to game compatibility with a Modchip.

As for updates bricking your Wii. Go to the Ultimate Sticky thread and read the threads listed there. The information is out there for you to learn.

If you decide to go with a Modchip then Wiikey 2 + Wiiclip is perfectly fine.

From TC:

Hey, you get what you pay for.

Modding a Wii is another event which qualifies for the "two out of three" paradigm.

Fast
Easy
Cheap

You will only get 2 out of three.

Some people might consider this a crass answer, but if you can't afford or justify the cost to have it, then maybe you shouldn't get it.

Ok, thanks guys.

So I read more and I guess there's still different views on using DVD-R or DVD+R on the wii. and I also discover all images should be AT LEAST 1.3gb or it will ruin the laser? Is that right?

Aww ok, I guess cheap wasn't a good word, I meant well-priced (ex. bang-for-the-buck). Ok, I'll go with the modchip method. I'm really leaning towards the wiiclip method because I don't want to fry my brand new wii.

But I heard that sometimes the wiiclip isn't very good, it might damage your console and that I would be better off soldering it or getting someone to solder it for me.

It seems that soldering the wii modchips will be much easier than soldering 21+ wire PS2 chips and I was only 14 five years ago when I tried to solder that chip. Long story short, should I get the wiichip or just solder a chip?

So I have the new D2E chip, which chip should I buy?
and where do you guys recommend I buy the chips from? I've seen some websites but just wanna know where people buy their chips from and if they know any good sites. Thanks again

The best move would be to get a professional to solder a chip in for you. Wii chips are not where you want to "work out" you're soldering skills. These are super small point your have to deal with. I'd say soft mod it over using a Wii clip. If you're opening the Wii up you may as well mod it right.

well it says that the wiiclip is good because if anything happens to my wii like a few months from now, I can just remove the wiiclip and send it back to nintendo to repair.

So after searching through sites and reading many reviews, it seems that the wiikey2 also has problems and that the d2pro9 w/ wiiclip will be my best option.

what do u think of these sellers? They're both official resellers so their products should be legit.

canadamods.ca (d2pro9 w/clip + triwing = $95- seems to have good cs)

gmodz.ca (d2pro9 w/clip + triwing = $81 - cheaper, but wiihacks don't approve of them in 2007)

D2Pro9 and WiiKey 2 are from the same people so they are pretty much the same.

First thing you should do is look at your D2E drive. Doe's it have black stuff covering the pins where you would place the WiiClip or solder the Modchip? If there is black stuff covering it then you should send it to a professional and have them mod it.

If there isn't black stuff then you can use a WiiClip. The WiiClip is stable if you install it properly.

You can get a nice deal from Modchip Central (D2Pro9 with WiiClip + triwing is $70/$60 for Wiikey 2 Wiiclip + Triwing). They are a very reliable place and prices are pretty decent. You can find the site HERE.

oh yea, they were the other website that i was going to order from. Thanks for reminding me

Ouch another thing keeps coming up, even after all that reading I never saw anyone mentioning the black glue until you and then I searched on it and came up with a bunch of results. Reading some tutorials, the glue/epoxy doesn't seem too too hard to get off.

I just assume my Wii would be a D2E because I got it on 10/29/08 from gamestop right when they restocked so I assumed it would be the newest batch. However when I entered it into the wii serial tracker, it says there was a 50% chance that it would be a D2C and a 50% chance that the legs were cut. I don't have a triwing so there's no way for me to open it up yet.

Well I figure if I got the D2pro9 w/ wiiclip, it wouldn't matter because it does D2C and D2E.

Oh btw, I switched to D2pro9 because there is no official wiiclip for the wiikey2 so it has to be soldered on weird so I don't think it would be as stable as just getting the D2pro9 w/ its official wiiclip.

Right now I emailed the modchipcentral company just to test out their customer service response time. If they reply soon, I will buy from them and update when I get it to tell about how it works and how stable it is. Thanks fellow afterdawn members

we arent approved because that entire forum is d2pro fan boys....we stated issues with d2pro9 chip and how other chips are more stable like wasabi and d2sun...DarkMod and a few others were banned from forum as well

Ok so my d2pro9 with v4c clip came in on monday. I brought it from modchipcentral on 11/3 and it came on 11/10, not bad for weekends and from canada to the US.

I had it presoldered by modchipcentral. However, not all the pins were soldered to the clip. I understand it only needed those 9 pins but it would be better to have the other points soldered to make the chip more stable. Also I would have to say the quality of the soldering job wasn't very good. The way they soldered the d2pro9 to the v4c clip, the pcb of the v4c clip wasn't straight, it was CURVED!

well it only took about 20-some minutes to take apart the wii and install the clip, thx to the video by canadamods.

Ok now I'm lost again guys. It only took 20-some minutes to install but I've been reading on how to backup my wii games for the past 4 hours and I still haven't found a definite result yet.

I have firmware 3.3u so I can't just use the dvd version of the homebrew channel installer. I don't have a SD geeko or TP game. so far all the dumpers I've read about need one of those two. The modchip says it does GC homebrew, isn't there something I can do to dump my wii/gc games to an sd card or wireless to my computer without SD geeko or Z:TP game?

oh yea the other method was to use an LG drive. It seems like that method was the easiest and fastest. Where can I find one for a good price since newegg doesn't sell those anymore?

Oh nevermind, I just brought a lg GDR-8163B off of eBay for $35 (damn jacked up price for old IDE dvd-rom). The main goal I want is to be able to back up and play my own wii and gamecube games but if any really good homebrew apps come out and I find out about it, I'll read up on it again one day.
