Depends on the file format of the video. .avi or DVD?

Thanks, I should of said it was a DVD. I am wishing to make a DVD for my father in law of just this person dancing in a show. There will be two performances and don't want to make him sit through the whole darn dvd. I sure hope there is something out there I can edit with. Break it down or something. Thanks

There is a simple free method using DVD Shrink.
Look here:

And more interactive guides here near the bottom:

Make a new folder and reauthor your original DVD three separate times to extract your three dances. Save each reauthored clip to your new folder (call it Dance Comp. or something you'll recognize). Then reauthor the whole new folder as one compilation DVD.

In Re-Author mode you can open the same DVD as many times as you want. Just drag your DVD to the left column three times and set start and enpoints for each segment in a different copy of the DVD.

You can try the demo of videoredotvsuite. The demo is limited to saving a 30 minute maximun file. When I last used the demo it didn't leave any watermarks.

It's frame accurate and will cutout all the scenes at one time. When it saves it will do without reencoding the quality will be the same as the original.

Peshtigo loved that tut ....... I understand it all, even getting to the point of ending and stopping, but it appears when I try to stop it is greyed out on that box, what am I doing wrong? I am trully getting frustrated..... This video is set as one Title, but when I open it up to watch it. The dances are listed by boxes and 1&2, 3&4 etc. But in these boxes there seems to be 3,4,5 dances. Grrrr. Now I can slide the slider to the dance, stop then play the dance and cannot stop it and save it. What am I doing wrong? Help please. hehe would love to do this before Xmas. Trully appreciate everyones help....cls99

You must use the slider and or the forward and back arrows to set your start and stop points, not the chapter "boxes". Once you start changing the start and stop points, the chapter boxes will be greyed out. Again, the slider and "frame" arrows and not chapter boxes then press OK. Repeat for each scene you want to save. Then click on the reauthored title and play in the preview window below to confirm your changes. You can always go back in and make a change until it's just right. When you're satisfied click "Backup" tab and proceed.

Adding a "graphics overlay", such as arrow or text, to your video is beyond home user capabilities (as far as I know). Cropping your video is possible, however, using a more full featured reauthoring program. They are not cheap and are somewhat labor intensive, especially for someone new to the task. Do you really want to go through all that for three dances? If so, say the word and I'll steer you in the right direction. Otherwise leave well enough alone.

You might want to go the freebie route first until you know what you're dealing with.

Look here:
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_.../virtualdub.cfm

And here:
http://www.screenvirtuoso.com/virtualdub-video-cropping.html

And here:
http://www.virtualdub.org/

Also use the search box on Afterdawn using keyword "VirtualDub" for guides and tips or google "VirtualDub Guides". But also be very aware that just like in photos, the more you crop, the more your image quality will suffer.
