I'm going to buy a ps3 very shortly but I like to hunt for deals ! where is the best place to buy a ps3?! I want the best deal! Backwards compatibility is a MUST! someone told me that I could buy a 40 gig since its the cheapest and run an emulator or something off it. is this an option elaborate. I already know about homebrew stuff so feel free 2 blast me with knowledge,.

I don't know about good deals but prices have sky rocketed for version of PS3 that has backwards compatibility since they are no longer in production. The 20GB and 60GB version are going for a pretty penny. The 80GB version (one bundled with Motostorm and one with MGS4) are also going for a bit but maybe not as much as the 60GB and 20GB as they only offer software emulation for PS2 games (20GB and 60GB run off hardware).
As far as homebrew or hack your SOL. The PS3 is the only next gen console that has not been hacked. A guy was able to run an app that you can play NES roms off a thumb drive (no sound) but thats pretty much the extent of it.

I thought it had homebrew but that is not of importance to me though. just price and backwards compatibility. I thought some of the 80 gig models were backwards compatible?! so it's only the 20 & the 60, I'll keep looking for a good price on those. If anyone knows of any good places or info please post.

Some 80 GB models are backwards compatible, but they're getting just as rare as the 60/20 GB ones now.

The thing is that there are two different 80 GB models. The first utilizes software emulation, and the second has no PS2 emulation whatsoever.

You can check here for the major differences between models - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playstation_3#Retail_configurations

Thanks 4 the link . it was very informative. The software emulation was more of what I was referring to rather than homebrew. I'm mean I see that the ps3 can run Linux. so I was wondering if the software emulation could be applied to any of the ps3's??? Idk y they would take a function like that off. I don't want to pay out the ass for a console I'll spend more time saving the money than actually playing it. I realize I'll probably have to pay a lot any way thats y I'm looking 4 the best deal. Continue to post info or sale locations please.

This is all great information. I was inspired in my tech class at my college. one of my class mates said y not install linux on it then run a ps2 emulator? the 100 gift card is the best deal I've heard yet. i could use the gift card 2 pay on my credit card after buying it.that 'd be awesome. the amazon deal wasn't a bad deal either depending on how much the blue ray movies cost please continue to Post comments, info , and deals

I think that the Wal-Mart one this Saturday is a $100 Gift Card that can probably only be used at Wal-Mart. If your gona use it for movies also, get the BlueTooth remote for it. It's nice. Or still, a free game and controler (almost).

There arent any fully functioning ps2 emulators that work even on high end gaming pc's, the ps3's power is very restricted under linux so even if there was a ps2 emulator linux on the ps3 couldnt handle it.
