After burning 5 different TV shows with Nero Express, both Nero Express and Deep Burner Pro show that they are on the DVD. But when I try to find them using My Computer (Windows 2000), all I get is an "invalid function" error. When I try to play them using the latest VLC, nothing happens when I click on the Z drive(my DVD player), so I don't seem to have access to them even though they are on the DVD media.

I just downloaded DVD Identifier and it shows one questionable item. Under the category "drive capabilities on this disk" is the statement:
=============================================================
"

Notice what is says about "MODE SENSE is obsolete." I don't know what this means, but it sounds ominous. Could it have any relationship to my problem.

I'm very new at this and I'd appreciate some advice on troubleshooting this kind of problem.

Thanks,

jc

I don't think the message is relevant - I get that on my burners.

Can you use Windows Explorer to read files on other DVD/CD's or is the problem this one disk.

both Nero Express and Deep Burner Pro show that they are on the DVD.

You can see a list of these files on the burned disk using Nero and Deep Burner Pro?

Using Explorer I have the same problem, and error message, with this one disk, but not with other disks. And I can see these files, on the burned disk, using either Nero Express or Deep Burner Pro.

Download ImgBurn and burn the files.

Run ImgBurn => Write Files/folders to disk.
Browse to, and add the files, click the 'Device' tab and set the burning speed to 4x or half the speed listed on the package.
Click the green arrow.

attar, thanks for the referral to ImgBurn, it's the first burning software I've tried that is logically oriented and easy to figure out...except for one crucial part, getting it to write my .avi files.

First thing it did was show the problem disk in question as being empty. Since Nero and DeepBurner are still showing the 5 .avi files on that disk, I wonder if they are just reading a saved file somewhere that was produced when I tried(and failed?) to burn those files to the disk. Anyway, this explains why I couldn't read the disk with My Computer/Explorer, or play the files.

I followed your instructions (except the green arrow is used to make the window larger or smaller in the version(2.4.2.0) I just downloaded. I added the 5 .avi files into the window. ImgBurn even let me chance the order of the files, what a classy software! I changed the write speed to 50% (8x). But the WRITE choice is grayed out and I haven't figured out what I need to do to get it to work. It's set to device file output. If I switch to image file output the BUILD command is bold, but I don't know enough about this to understand why I would need an image file. When I successfully burn similar .avi files with Nero and DeepBurner, they were done as a data disk and I don't think any images were involved.

Any suggestions about this problem?

For a data disk I just select 'Write files/folders..', then open or drag them into the window.
If a blank disk is inserted, the green 'Write' button is available to start burning.

attar, what you show in your images is exactly what I have, but the icons were grayed out. I changed disks and the icons came back and I was able to burn the files in question. Problem is, I can't play them. VLC doesn't seem to recognize or find the DVD burner/player in my computer when this disk is in it. BTW, it's a new burner, only about 2 months old (from NewEgg). It works fine with other disks that I've burned previously. So there's something happening to the disk when I burn it, it doesn't seem to matter which burning software I use.

Two weeks ago I didn't have this problem, same DVD disks, same burner/player. Then I installed Nero Express (Nero micro) and since then I've had this problem. I think the obvious thing is to uninstall Nero Express and see if that changes anything. Do you have any other suggestions?

Also, is there a way to view the file list, on the DVD, using ImgBurn. I haven't found it if there is.

John

Are these AVI files?
And they are being burned as data?
If so can you drag one into 'GSpot' and post a screen of the contents.
Verify that the codecs are installed and you can render the file.
