I was wondering why some blu ray mkv videos have the dimensions of 1280X544 or 1280X688, etc. but are still in 720p?

Shouldn't they be in 1280X720?

I understand it's probably for a wider shot, but the height is pretty small for viewing on a non-wide screen source (pc screen). Is it better on a wide screen source?

Thanks.

I noticed the same thing. I'm trying to encode a video into blu-ray form with Ripbot264 right now. My BPD-BX1 Blu-ray Player doesn't support the resolution you stated above. So I did some searching and I looked at this post:
Quote:

Crop and Resize
Click on Properties to crop and resize video.
Many movies are in 2.35 or 2.40 aspect ratio(check the back on Blu-ray cover) with black borders in the source Blu-ray video so we can crop out those. Under Crop choose automatically.
Use the size if you want to down resize to smaller format like 1280x720(16:9) or choose Custom for 1280x544(2.35:1) or 1280x534(2.40:1).
Click on the Preview to view how it will look like.

Trying it now, i'll let you know if it lets me play it on my blu-ray player at that resolution with no split screening action going on

They are at that resolution because the black bars have been cropped off. Unless your are dealing with anime chances are that the videos will have black bars and depending on the encoder he/she can opt to either keep the black bars or crop them off.

And if you're using Ripbot264 I think you have to have it 1280x720p or it will not display correctly when you rip it as a .bluray.

Hi,

Here's a nice chart that explains he needed Ratios for AVCHD.
