Hello,
The guy who sold me the 360 showed me the console playing a back up game but did not tell me which firmware he flashed the console with. The only hint he gave about the firmware that he used is that it does not prevent the console from playing original games (as I already found out) or connecting to Xbox LIVE. Now that I am ready to back up my original games, I have some questions:

1. How do I tell which firmware this 360 was flashed with? (Not sure if this makes a difference, but the DVD tray is a Toshiba-Samsung)

2. Do back up games need to be burned in a certain manner so they are compatible with the specific firmware this 360 was flashed with? (ie: does the answer to question #1 matter?)

3. Will I be able to make working back ups using a Pioneer DVR-108 DVD burner?

4. If I reset the 360's settings, will the firmware be erased?

Okay hopefully this can help you out:

1. I would try contacting the person that sold it to you, and see what he knows. The latest Firmware for the 360 is iXtreme 1.4.

2. To burn 360 games, you would want to download ImgBurn and burn them with that. The 360 games should be compatible, because it's been a while since someone used the Xtreme Firmware, so I'm pretty sure you have iXtreme on it.

3. I have a Pioneer 111D, and it works well for burning games, but any Burner that's DL compatible will be fine. You won't be able to use that drive to read 360 games and back them up. you need what is called a Kreon Drive (they sell them on eBay).

4. No that will not remove the firmware. Only way to get 360 Firmware off, is to flash the system with the original Firmware.

That makes sense, thanks.

So assuming I have this console has the iXtreme 1.4 firmware and decide to upgrade to a newer version in the future, can I do that myself or should I ask a pro to do it for me? If you could explain how the iXtreme firmware is installed go right ahead. Thanks.

NEVER assume. Get a definate answer from that guy. For all you know it could have the original Xtreme firmware on it. He could have bought it flashed from someone else (unless you seen him flash it, of course).

Any version firmware will play backups. The difference is the new firmware is geared towards backups being stealth on LIVE.

If you don't plan on playing on LIVE then don't worry about it. But if you do, I would unplug your network cable until you have definate answers.
