What I'm getting at is, with the xbox 360 it can done, with the wii it can't be done. Does it have to do with more effective copy protection schemes or just technical differences? Or could it in theory be done, just that noone has done it yet?

A custom firmware patch is part of the procedure to use the backup loader. As to why we still need a program to boot backups even after the cIOS is installed, I think you're right and its just technical differences. The xbox uses a standard DVD drive with firmware available freely online and thus is more open to attack. The wii's drive is a propitiatory device and therefore more secure.

as well look at the fact in which they are able to flash the firmware via RAID on the 360 Drives, on the Wii what exactly would you plug into the back of that? :)
