or at least thats what i assume. when ever i insert any type of disc (music cd, blank cds and dvds, dvds) i hear it spin for a little bit but then it just stops. ive tried to burn a dvd using nero and it works normally but it doesnt burn onto the disc. it works even when the dic drive is empty or open. i also tried burning an audio cd using windows media player and it says a cd drive is needed.
any help is appreciated.
thanks in advance

Try going to My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager. See if your drive is listed. Uninstall device and restart. Try it now.

I expected the yellow "thing". Did you uninstall the drive and restart? Right click the drive in question. Click uninstall. Restart. Check device manager to see if yellow thing is gone. If still yellow we need to get you a driver.

First take the cover off the PC and check that your optical drive connections are secure. Use the proper safety precautions first. Google for them. There are even videos online. As long as you're in there, blow the dust out. Recheck Device Manager for the yellow indicator. If still yellow you will have to reinstall your drivers either from the Windows installation disc or the Manufacturer's driver disc that came with your PC (or google for drivers for your model). If that fails your drive is shot. Buy a new one.

that is probably your audio cable which is not causing the problem.

wow, im extremely frustrated!
i got Samsung cd-rom sc-148c to replace and this is getting the exact same problems
so i follow the steps on here (http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/500570-missing-driver-samsung-cd-rom.html) for both drives. still no luck
I am now willing to shell out more cash in order to have an external disc drive. will it work just like a regular disc drive?
i mean, since it is external will it work right off the bat?

CD-ROM = CD Read Only Memory.
That drive prolly isn't gonna read DVD's let alone write anything. It's NOT a burner let's put it like that!!
Now go to this link and look at 2 very good drives for the money. BUY one of them, I don't care which. Stick it in your machine and you're off and running again like nothing ever happened. ;)
If you wanna go external then that's something different altogether. You can purchase an external enclosure to install your new IDE burner or just buy one outright. ;)
external enclosure These will all work with the units I posted above. I actually have the 20A4P in a Galaxy enclosure and it's a beauty. :D
external Lite-On Not bad for $49.99.
Give that some thought and ask some questions if need be. And yes they will work right out of the box if you have XP or Vista. Good luck.

What drive did you use to burn that DVD? The old one or the Samsung?
