Matrix DVD-R 4x media problems

I know there was a thread from last march about this, and I couldn't revive it, but I have some matrix dvd-r that lets me burn at 2x but not 4x on my sony dru-510a. I have the latest firmware updates. I have 100% success at 2x, but only about 33% success at 4x - is this just junky media or can I fix the problem using another burning software besides Nero? The matrix dvd+r at 4x burned great, 100% success all the time. Any help or info would be great - I know everyone talks about Ritex media, but how does optodisc stack up?
