I am new at this so please forgive my ignorance. I've been reading many posts and cant seem to find what I'm looking for. I just installed a D2pro in the wii and inserted a backup copy of wii music and without knowing better upgraded to 3.3. I do not have homebrew or anything else installed(just running the chip), Is this going to prevent me from running other backups and if so what do I need to do? Also I don't know what some of these posts mean by Truncha signed disks, What are they and how do you know if they are or not?

So long as the game is from your wii's home region and you dont do homebrew its safe to update. Truncha-signed disks are disks that have been edited to remove the updates, or change the update to that of a different region, or edited in some other way like the homebrew channel installer iso.

But if all you do is play backup games from your wii's home region then you dont have to worry.

You shouldn't have any issues running backup disc as long as they have not been trucha signed.

Trucha Signed disc is a fake signature that was used to run signed code. 3.2 and below was vulnerable to this hack but Nintendo closed this hole with the 3.3 firmware update.

As far as I know there isn't a way to tell if a disc has been trucha signed or not. If there is a way i am sure someone will speak up and correct me.

Even if you do have 3.3 firmware you can still bypass the new Nintendo block by using GeckoOS to boot the trucha signed disc. This is a homebrew application which was designed to boot out of region game disc on your Wii system but also lets turcha signed disc play on an updated 3.3 firmware.

As long as you have not used the Internet to update your system on October 23rd or after then you shouldn't have any issues installing and using homebrew.

There is allot of information here in the Wii forum and I would suggest spending some time reading over it and threads in the Ultimate Sticky section to get a better knowledge on when and when not to update and how to protect from bricks etc. etc.

Thank You for your help. What I am doing is backing up copies of my kids games because they tend to destroy them. So if I understand you correctly If all I am doing is backing up my regions games running a modchip I'm ok.

Again thanks for the help

Do you think that I should install homebrew, "just in case"?
