I've heard others complain about getting dizzy while playing FPS games and let me tell you, I'm in the same boat. I was just thinking if it had anything to do with the type of TV I was using. I've been playing PS2 and PS3 games on my 27in SDTV for as long as I can remember and never had the luxory of playing any games on a HDTV. I was wondering if using a HDTV will fix the problem.

My question is if anyone with HD/LCD TV have the same problem or is it just the ones with SDTV like me?

Just curious to find out even though I'm buying a new TV next week(blackfriday).

I've heard of that happening to other people as well, personally SDTV's will give me a headache after a short while; haven't had any since I went HD. I'm using a 22" lcd computer monitor now.

I could see the HDTV solving motion sickness because it would be clearer/crisper and easier to follow. I can't say for sure though, I've only heard of people with the problem and not of how they stopped it much like you.

I get this problem on the old xbox and now the 360 too (sorry i don't get this problem on PS2's and i don't own a PS3). I get this problem on both SD and HDTV's, and i have this on the 360 even though i'm using 720p at the moment. I was using 1080i first and experienced headaches after a few hours of Halo 3. Changed to 720p, played again a few hours later and the same happened.

I personally get this on most FPS games, regardless of what machine/frame rate, so i think it's down to the motion of the games and i think some of us just get headaches from FPS games ie the constant moving around quickly (have had the same issue since the days of Doom etc, again regardless of power of pc and/or video card). However i do also get headaches on a PC if the refresh rate isn't sufficient, but not from playing games - this is only if i've sat in front of a crappy monitor with insufficient refresh rate for hours.

The only workaround i know of is to play FPS games for only a few hours at a time. My HDTV is a 32" and it's top end is 1080i, i'm no expert on 360's (yet) and Halo 3 only had a slowdown in 1 tiny part of 1 game level so i'm pretty sure that the console and my tv are more than up to the job.
I'm not saying not to buy a HD tv, i'm just saying that if you're like me, the problem is with us and not the equipment so you may well still experience this annoying problem...

If there is a lot of motion on the screen this happened to me as well. What I did was switch to third person view... not quite the same effect but at least I got to play the game.

It's funny, when you get sick from a particular food you don't (or at least I don't) want to eat it for a while. This happened to me with Final Fantasy XII, two years ago. I was just getting over the flu as well, but still... no desire to play it at all.

Yeah, what most of these folks have said.

Very often the issue is simply that you get sick when playing FPS games. This happened quite often during the first couple years of Doom, if I remember correctly.

The way HDTVs might help isn't in that their hardware or anything makes it better, but it's more likely that the screen is much bigger, which relieves some of the stress on your eyes and senses. That's hardly a medical reason or anything, but it'd be my guess.

I've never had a problem with FPS's or any other game I've played...until I played Guitar Hero at a buddies house. We were probably 15' away from his 70" DLP and screwed me up pretty good. I bought Rock Band back in July and don't have any problems playing it on my 47" LCD so I thought maybe it was just a fluke with Guitar Hero. Then I played Guitar Hero at my sister-in-laws on a 28" CRT and suffered the same symptoms.

The only FPS that has made me dizzy was the original Doom for the 32X. When my friends played I felt nauseous. When I played I was still nauseous but not as much as when my friends had the control. My theory was since I did not go where my friends was going to go in the game It screwed me up making me dizzy. But when I was in control I was as dizzy since I knew where I was going. I think in my case I was just not use to the FPS view, but in time I got over it.
Is your dizziness new? Or is it something that just started to occur? Your eyes may need to be checked but that just my opinion. If it persis I suggest seeing your doctor.

After doing a little research, I think the issue might be the TV's response time. It plays a part in reducing blurring when displaying fast motion. They say look for a LCD with a response time of 8ms or lower for the best experience.

My question is how is the response time for SDTV comapared to LCD TV? Is it noticeable between 8ms and 6ms? Or does it depend on the developers that make the games? which I hope isn't the case so I can rely on a new TV to fix my problem. It would really suck to pay for a new TV only to find out that the blurring effect is worse than my old SDTV. Thanks for all the feedback by the way.

I believe its called pilot motion sickness or something like that.

It happens to me too, specially with FPS. From what ive read it has to do with our field of vision mixing with the field of vision of the game.

You have 2 options

1)Stop playing those games - stay with tetris...
2)Get over it - train your mind (hehe)

It used to happen to me a lot but Ive gotten over it. You can practice with a game that gives you motion sickness for about 10-15 mins a day. Just when you start feeling drowsy...stop and dont play again till next day. With time youll be able to play more minutes a day until you finally get over it.

The pilots get over it with intense training...you can do it too.

Games that made me sick...literally:

Kingdom Hearts - I dunno why....must be the camera movement
Metroid Prime - even to the point of throwing up
Halo
Call of Duty
Medal of Honor
Every other FPS available

Lately Ive been able to play:

Call of Duty
Resistance
Metroid Prime
MoHonor
Oblivion
BioShock
Halo

Good Luck!

I got it really bad playing GTA IV last night, the frame rate in the game seemed to struggle quite a bit on outdoor scenes. So i will only be able tp play that in short bursts, it seems certain games on the PS3 seem to struggle on the hardware.

Never got sick off FPS's, (last gen or this gen) but I got very dizzy trying to play PS3 Burnout Paradise on my 36" SDTV. I switched to my 26" HDTV in my bedroom and headache gone. I should also mention that I never got motion sick on any PS2 or XBOX 1 game, including Burnout Revenge (for comparison). My theory was that for Paradise, there was just too much going on and too much compressed, causing blurring everywhere. My eyes couldn't adjust. Maybe I shouldn't have used S-Video. The vibrant colors probably stood out more, causing more harm than good.

FYI, SDTV can be an LCD. Think you're mixing things up here.

CRT - Refresh rate at 75hz is good
LCD - Response time at 16ms or less is good
Plasma - Response time is not an issue like LCD, so no one bothers advertising what it's actual response time is.

SDTV - 480p
HDTV - 720p, 1080i/p

LCD response times haven't been an issue for the past like...4 years. Everything is well below 16ms. This dizziness is just based on the person's inability to deal with fast movement in games.

The issue will probably only get worse as you go higher in resolutions and graphics. That's more crap on screen to be moving around. Might just make you get dizzy a bit quicker. I'd simply suggest taking short breaks to give your eyes a rest.

Take in more foods with Vitamin C, A, E. They're good for your eyes.

Don't know how well motion sickness pills will work for fast movement/eye strain dizziness. Can always try it out, who knows. Might work.

LOL at the sea sickness pills.
I played Halo 3 for hours yesterday, until 4am. Didn't feel hardly sick at all, hence why i was able to keep playing. The game only made me feel ill a couple times, where there was so much going on that the framerate noticably struggled (shame on you Bungie's coding, or maybe it's Microsoft's fault - i thought this was a powerful machine).
Either way it's good to see a comment that agrees with mine, some people are just susceptible to stuff like this. (Funnily i don't ever get travel sick or anything like that, it's just video games).

Anyways, i have a feeling i'm on the last level of Halo as the enemies on screen have been relentless, and my point in replying is that i'll be starting GTA 4 properly afterwards, and as i mentioned before, this game made me feel really ill. Again it might be down to sloppy coding ie the framerate is probably subpar when too much is going on, either way i will be in for a major headache at some point soon...
