Data type not supported for avi file

I have a multimedia P2P program that I pay for, and I have been downloading movies, all in the avi format, and burning them on DVDs as a data disc.
So far I've done The Strangers, Iron Man, Dark Knight, and Get Smart. All of these movies were in the avi format.
Today I downloaded Step Brothers in the avi format, same as the others, and did what I usually did; burn the file to a DVD as a data disc via my DivX Player.
I proceed to insert the disc in my PS3 and when selecting the movie file to play it under the Video category, I got "Data type not supported" and nothing else.
Does anyone know what might be going on? Is there something I can do?

If you have been able to convert your .avi files and have them play in you're ps3, then what has changed here? Have you changed the brand or type of media blanks you use? (dvd-r/dvd+r) perhaps you use the one brand and type but have a different batch or a different speed rating. Your thoughts?
This might be worth a mention also, if you use DVD+R try booktyping if your drive supports this. (assuming you don't already booktype) The effect is turning your media from +R to a more friendly/compliant ROM disc.

I've had a similar problem with mines, but i have a external with the avi files. But I think it may have to do with the kind of codec or something that the avi was encoded with. My avi files are from a tv show, and when the tv show went HD the encoding they used to create the avi changed. Same avi extension but different encoding. Maybe this may help. If its a media issue(dvd-r,+r etc) try using a thumb drive or ext hard drive (remember FAT32 file system for ps3) and don't forget to click display all in the ps3 options for the hard drive. ^_^

It should be a DVD media problem ( I have been using Sony DVD-R for all of them. And I dont think any type of conversion has been done any time I write a disc.
I will look into converting and also booktyping (I will have to look that up since this is the first time I've heard of that)
I will reply on my progress.

It's not a DVD problem, don't waste anymore DVDs. Just because a media file is in the .avi container doesn't mean it's the same as the next. The issue is most likely a codec that is not compatible with the PS3, you'll need to recode to a compatible format. If your container is AVI, make sure the codec is h264.
Also, before burning your media to a DVD you may want to test with a USB stick as raj1386 suggests.

In more simpler words yes, thats what im suggesting. Good use of the word container. Can't help anymore now T_T i just did something wrong to my ps3, i was playing a movie file and now it won't show anything. must dig through the forums.

Anything? XMB, other videos, games? Could be a corrupt vid... or a loose cable.
