I have a Hitachi drive, and was wondering is there anyway to flsh w/o a SATA cable link.

Afraid not. The SATA cable allows your computer to recognize the drive as if it was one of your other optical drives and by doing so you are able to access the firmware and flash it. If you want a bunch of good info check out the textbook (google it, it shouldn't be hard to find).
