Can i surf etc while ripping (shrink 3.5).
I am aware burning is best left to its own devices, but is it safe while ripping or is there no way of upsetting the file tranfer. Thanks in advance.

I think it depends on the spec of your pc I browse a little while ripping but not often I would prefer to leave it well alone but it can be done
just keep an eye on the buffer setting will let you know how hard ya pc is working

I've ripped, folded (w/folding@home), surfed (w/cable modem), checked e-mail (w/outlook), and run a hardware monitor (to keep tabs on my CPU temp)... all simultaneously with no problems.

I think it largely depends on your computer. I've got an Intel 2.4C overclocked to 3.15GHz, 2x256 PC4000 OCZ memory with moderate timings [2.5-4-4-7], two raptors in RAID0, and a Pioneer A06, on an Abit-IC7 Max3. I haven't noticed that running all the processes mention (above) makes my DVDshrink sessions longer. Although, since I'm ripping with a Pioneer A06, only so much data is flowing down the IDE channel for the CPU to process.

The A06 is the bottleneck.... Soon to be fixed, as I've ordered a Liteon S166 (16x DVD ROM drive) for the express purpose of faster ripping. So, data flowing down the IDE channel will be much faster.... I wonder once that happens, if I'll still be able to run all those processes I mentioned simultaneously?

I think the most important thing is to make sure your memory and CPU can handle it (especially if your overclocking)... run MemTest86 and CPU burnin, to make sure your overclock or temp isn't too high... which can cause the system to crash.

I hesitate to running all these processes while burning, because even with the buffers, I don't think you want to do disk drive intestive tasks while burning (i.e., virus scanning your hard drive). That said, I just finished three burns (14 minutes each), back-to-back w/Nero, while running folding-at-home... So, seems like if your PC is built well, it can handle it.
