Best Video format for the XBOX 360? Divx/XVID Avi, or H.264?

To be honest, i have no idea what H.264 is, i have never encoded to it before.

I have AutoGK if i decide to encode a divx AVI file... i have either MeGui or Cucusoft DVD converter that support H.264

what i plan on doing is converting all my favorite dvd's to a playable format on my xbox 360, which i will store on a USB hard drive that will sit on my entertainment center.. no more swapping movies!

i just want the best quality at the best compression... divx has always been my choice, but supposedly this other format is newer and better quality

can anyone advise?
