Welcome to Afterdawn! Now, one thing that you must understand is that DVD Shrink is no longer being supported. DVD Shrink just can't handle the newer encryptions that have been developed. So, to get around this you have to decrypt your DVD with a program that is still being supported. The two favorites around here are AnyDVD and DVDFAB. AnyDVD has a 21-day free trial and DVDFAB has a free version. AnyDVD will decrypt your DVD in the background so that when you use DVD Shrink it will see a unencrypted DVD. DVDFAB will decrypt your DVD and rip it to your hard drive. (So will AnyDVD) These are the steps that I take to backup my DVDs.
1. Rip to hard drive using DVDFAB. (or AnyDVD. I have both)
2. Process the files on the hard drive with FixVTS. (This make the file more compliant)
3. Run DVD Shrink and point it to the processed files on the hard drive.
4. Burn with Imgburn.
Using this method, I've have not had any DVD that I couldn't backup.
The best thing about this method is that, with the exception of AnyDVD, all the software mentioned is free.

Thank you Vulcan94. I hear what you are saying. I used DVDdecrypter to decrypt and rip to my hard drive. I was using Scubapete's Guides "Movie only with Shrink and Decrypter" http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/petesguide13.html. Everything went fine till I got to Shrink. This is my first time ever trying to burn a DVD. So are you saying that Shrink works but with a different Decrypter? I know if I use a different piece of software and there are no instructions I'm not going to be able to process it. So, can you explain it to me in very simple terms just what I need to burn or copy a DVD. Scubapete said I could find all my answers here here. Thank you so much for your reply.

Hello again,
I have a question. Is there another piece of software out there that can shrink the size of a dvd other than dvdshrink? DVD Shrink will not work on my computer. I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition. I have IE7 installed. Would it be better to buy blank dvd's with more capacity? Thank you for any answers you provide.

Try using DVDFAB to decrypt your DVD. DVDdecypter has the same problem that DVD Shrink has, it is no longer being supported, so it can't handle the newer encryption methods. I have used my steps on computers that have Windows XP and Vista Home Premium. Download FixVTS and run your files through it. Then give DVD Shrink another try. If that fails, I would download the free version of DVD Rebuilder. DVD Rebuilder is more complicated to use, but it's output is much better quality than DVD Shrink.

Edit to add:What DVD are you trying to backup? Did you rip it as a ISO?

Wow! I just burned my fist DVD, man am I excited. I didn't know quite what I was doing but I got it done. Remember I told you before that I was using Scubapete's guide to "burning a movie only DVD with Shrink and DVD Decrypter" and he started with DVD Decrypter to rip the source DVD to a folder. That worked ok but when I Tried using Shrink that's when I had a problem. You told me to use Imgburn to burn my DVD. I downloaded it and pointed it to the folder I had the original DVD contents in and it burned it without error and even played me a tune at the end of the burn. I just played it and it looks ok to me. I'm going to try using FixVTS for my next session and see how it works. I thank you so much for your patience and help. Have a great evening.

Great to hear that! You will learn that there are a lot of different ways to backup your DVDs. Just read the diff. guides here on Afterdawn and the threads as well. You will find that this is only the start of this particular addiction.
