I have a LiteOn 851s external burner.

my question is are these discs a good combination for that drive?

Yes, you have the good ones, however it seem that most of these now are actually the 16X variety, the last ones I got were 16X. Still good disks. Your burner however is listed as the maximum burn speed for DVD-R at 4X, is this true? If so I would recommend against these and recommend a new burner due to its age and supposed inability to handle newer media speeds.

Read thru this thread, and find a drive which you like which has good scans and the guys agree on. Don't be afraid to ask a question about who recommends what, myself I'm partial to Lite-On drives. Then, check out www.newegg.com for their good deals on optical drives.

The Taiyo Yuden are the best you can get no matter what burner you have. Ritek can be sub-par. even though the Lite-On ODDs are good I think Pioneer are making the best ODDs if you're in the market for a new one. remember to burn at 6x to 8x max with the most up to date fireware for you're ODD

I prefer the Liteon drives. Quiet, fast, dependable.

or external:

I use both of these for various jobs. Excellent.

Not one I'd recommend. Why are folks always attracted to the cheapest (and usually cheaply made) things. I've got one (yes I fell for cheapest). That one was claimed to be a BenQ (bought and cheapened by Lite-on). Nothing like my Benq 1640. The DH-20A4P-04 is of the noisiest, flimsiest burners I ever had. Not even in the same ball park as my Pioneer 115D and BenQ.

Looking for a new burner? Check here.

The reviews also help to determine which media gives the best results.

I agree somewhat. Like most things today (especially computer peripherals) electronics are manufactured as "throw aways", not for the long term. Thus, the cheap price (and quality of build). All it has to do is operate reliably for the workload you predetermine. That Liteon burner should fulfill the average users' expectations for a year or two, if not more. By that time they'll be cheaper yet. Don't expect any optical drive to last for the lifetime of your PC. And if you're lucky and it does, you probably won't want either one anymore anyway.

thats why i spent 20 dollars.

my 6 year old external liteon is still going strong as long as i feed it good media to burn onto. works great but i would like something faster and ill use my external in my sons pc. so this 20 dollar burner will probably be just fine.
