external blu-ray reader for broken laser

Has anybody tried to use an external usb blueray reader to substitute for the broken laser on the origina ps3?

The system wouldn't boot up if the blu-ray isn't plugged in. Just as when your HDD is bad, your computer gives you an error message when you boot up. If your blu-ray is just bad but plugged in and you have an external I think it would work but you'd still need the drivers for an external drive. At this time, the PS3 doesn't support external optical drives.
