Hi everyone.

A friend of mine is selling me his NTSC Wii (LU47xxxxx), and it has a modchip inside, but he does not know which one.

I downloaded and burned Wiikey Config CD 1.2b, burned it and booted the Wii with it.

I can access the menus using the reset button, it tells me that Region is set to NO, DVD speed 6x, and Audio NO.

Based on this evidence, it is enough to assume that there is a Wiikey 1 inside (as it was installed in August 08) ?

Would the Wii display the same menus IF a Wiikey was NOT present ?

If so, is there a way of checking which FW the Wiikey has?

The Wii FW version is 3.0U.

Thanks for your help.

The config disk will actually run on any modchip. The only real test is trying to run the update disk.

However I can tell you just from your serial number that theres no way you have a wiikey installed.

There is no way of checking what modchip you have short of opening up the console and looking at it. And even once you do that there is no way of seeing what firmware is installed on the chip, even if you do have a chip that is upgradable.

thank you for the reply.

thank you for confirming what I thought was the inevitable truth. I have to open it up to check which chip's inside. Having looked at a lot of pictures on the net, I think that I will be able to identify whether its a genuine wiikey or a cheap clone.
this is me being a moron, and forgetting the 10 in front of the serial which should read LU1047 instead. Doh.

a great thank you for your assistance.

Ah, ok. Well in that case there is a very good chance you have a wiikey. There is a way to tell if its an original or a clone. Just attempt to run the 1.9s update. The 1.9g and s updates are not compatible with the clone chips.

The 1.9g and s updates are not compatible with the clone chips...

What happens if the update fails? Does it leave me with a bricked cloned Wiikey chip, since I guess these would not have the ability to recover like the orginials?

Or does it fail at checksum?

Thanks again for the enlightenment. There is so much information lying around, you never know what to believe or not.
