if the disk dosent work you wont be able to install it, as long as the disc works then you should be able to install it with no problem.

Thanx but the game in concern here is gears of war. Multiplayer is hitch free but in single player I can only play up to a certain point, then the disc just stops spinning and sends me back to dashboard. Is there anyone who has actually tested it for themselves? Obviously a disk that dosent work won't be installed but how bout a semi working 1? Thanx for the reply tommyl.

If i were you i would rent the game that's giving you problems and install it to the hard drive. Then when you put in your scratched disc it will see that it's the original and it will load.

I thought it was common sense...

My call of duty 4 disc got scratched big time and would not play at all so I was out my cod4. I just installed my friends cod4 onto my hard drive and now all I have to do is put my scratched game in and play it from the hard drive. works like a charm. I guess it just reads the SS in the center and says all is a go.
