Using itunes to convert mp3 to aac format

Hi, I got a new iphone 3G. I'm trying to create ringtones from music files. I followed the instructions on the following site http://www.ehow.com/how_2160460_custom-iphone-ringtones-free.html
and it doesn't work. I used Audacity program to create a part of the song that's less than 40 sec long. When I try to convert thesong to aac format using itunes it doesn't show the converted version, so I'm stuck. I've tried it so many times. The song is not dublicated and it stays in mp3 format, although it processes converting.
What should I do? It is very frustrating. By the way the version of Itunes is the latest 8.0.2.20(HP)!
