Hello Everyone!
I am your newest newbie!
I have DVD Shrink, and decrypter and Nero 6. I have a DVD that has been damaged at the start. It will play - with difficulty - but to get over the "stuttering and jumping" I would like to copy it from after the damaged section.
I am not able to copy it on any of the 3 programmes I have, it gives different reasons, like read error (or something!)
What I want to do is to be able to watch the DVD playing and 'hit' a record button just as the damaged portion has ended.
I am not sure if by doing this I am doing something illegal. I have no wish to profit from doing this, just to have the DVD in a playable condition. (It is a Jazz event and is not replaceable)
I look forward to any advice that you may be able to give.
I have tried to find a programme on the internet, but I keep getting answers that I do not understand like different formats etc. I just want to copy what I have to another DVD without the damaged bit!

If it's a commercial disk, I would first try to copy it to the hard drive using DVDFab HD Decrypter.
If that didn't work I would wash the disk under running water with an old toothbrush and toothpaste.
Moderate pressure stroking in one direction from centre to rim.
Rinse and pat dry with a lint free towel - then try ripping again.
I have also used that stuff that is used to polish metal 'Nevr-Dull' 'Magic Wadding' is a cotton ball impregnated with a mild polish - but it's not for the timid or shy.
For a burned disk, I would try to open the contents in the likes of VirtualDub or Avidemux and convert it to AVI.

Thank you Attar,
This AVI is one of the terms I saw and did not understand. It is an original, not burned, but if I convert a DVD to AVI and put it on the hard disk, can I burn it onto a DVD-R in the original format that will allow it to be played on a DVD player? (Just out of interest, what is the 'original format'?)

If it can be ripped to the hard drive and played back ok, then it should be possible to burn it back to a new DVD - with the caution that if the files are too large for a standard DVD-5, then it has to be burned to a DL disk or shrinked to fit a standard disk..
You have to get the files on the HD before that.

@billto. Failing any of the above, you could take that disc into your local DVD rental shop. They most likely have a resurfacing machine, that'll work wonders. My local still charges $5 per disc, it does get a little cheaper when a certain person is "on watch" though. Never underestimate the power of a big cheesy grin and flattery.
EDIT: @billto. ....but don't whatever you do forget the flattery heheheh. I was actually going to make a joke regarding the fairer sex, but since Varnull is on the prowl...I digress. Safer all round I suspect. lol. ;P

What works for me with discs that are in really bad shape is Ripit4me. You will need DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter (the old one not FAB) and FixVTS. Put the disc in the drive and then open Ripit4me use the one step method. That will take you to Decrypter IF it gets to the point where it say it can't read some sectors would you like to try again, answer NO, most times that will skip over that part, FixVTS kicks in, and then DVD Shrink. You should be able to salvage most of the original. I have had this worked with damaged discs that have a slight crack in them.

I have finally managed to copy the DVD.
My mistake was ignorance of usage of the programme. It was, for me, difficult, but clear explanation has assisted the success.

Dvd decrypter set to rip with brute force and ingore all read errors:That has helped rip a few damaged discs.
Also ImgBurn has done a couple when all else fails.
Those are 2 free programs that everyone should have in their arsenal.
