Hi-
I'm considering buying a PSP (that I will be modding), and was hoping I could get some suggestions...
Should I buy a new PSP, and downgrade the firmware? With Sony just releasing the newest firmware, should I expect to see that out in the market yet (or will they still be blowing through earlier generations)? Any reason to stay away from a new PSP?
Should I consider a used PSP? I've been burnt with used consoles (I just bought a used Xbox 360 from GAMESTOP, and had the RROD after a week). Is it worth saving the $50-$60 to buy used (considering I'd spend that on a 4GB or 8GB memory card)?
Any specific PSP generations I should look for (sounds like 1.50 is the version to have, but will it be possible to find)? Any I should stay away from? Slim? Piano Black? Special Edition?
Bottomline... I'm looking for the "easiest" PSP to mod for homebrew, backups, and everything inbetween. Thoughts?
Thanks for your help!

I personally have a PSP 2000 Slim Silver (I stayed away from the piano black because of fingerprints) currently running 5.00 M33-3 CFW on it with no problems. I made the magic memory stick and Pandora's battery myself with the help of the guides here.
I never buy any electronics used. To me its worth the extra money to have a brand new one.
As for homebrew, I haven't really experimented beyond PSX emulation, but there are definitely more experienced users here that could help you out with that.
I stayed away from the PSP 3000 because of the weird interlacing issues with the new screen, but that's just my opinion.

Thanks slik.
Just to follow up, how do you know you're purchasing the 2000 vs. the 3000? Is it clearly labeled on the box? Or, do you need to look somewhere on the serial number (for example, one tutorial said you need to look for the letter "A" under the barcode)?
I would think, if the 3000 generation is already out, it'd be rather difficult to find the 2000 generation. But, perhaps I'm wrong. Any thoughts there?
Thanks again.

The retailers where I live don't sell the PSP 3000 by itself, but I haven't really inquired that much. Major retailers should still have 2000 bundles in stock.
The easiest way to tell is just by looking at the picture on the box. On the 2000 it has a "Home" button on the far left of the middle buttons, while the 3000 replaces that with a "PS" button (just the Playstation logo).
I don't know where you live but Amazon still has the PSP 2000, and a 4GB memory stick for ~$25.

The psp3000 you find in the stores will be packaged as the 'limited edition' ratchet and clank version-It is a silver one similar to the Daxter pack when the 2000's first came out. That one you want to stay away from. Also some of the blue madden pack slim 2000's and some of the piano black 2000's have the TA-088v3 motherboard which cannot be modded at the moment. I would check your local craigslist for a good used one...It is too much of a gamble these days with getting a new psp off the shelf at a retailer. You cant really tell what you are getting by looking at the UPC box codes anymore. From what I read, its the ones released in 2008 that are the ones to avoid. Which are some of the blue maddens, and some of the piano blacks-they mix them in gradually to throw people off.

This is great help... Thanks guys.
So, it sounds pretty simple: Buy a PSP with a "HOME" button. Do NOT buy a PSP with a "PS" button.
I went to amazon.com, and put a list together of good and bad systems. Good = able to mod, Bad = stay away from (as of 11/24/08). Agree/Disagree?
Good
PSP 2000 Console
PSP God of War Entertainment Pack
PSP Daxter Entertainment Pack
PlayStation Portable Core (PSP 1000)
PSP Star Wars Battlefront Renegade Squadron Entertainment Pack
Sony PSP-1001K PlayStation Portable
PlayStation Portable (PSP) Value Pack
Bad
PSP 3000 Limited Edition Ratchet and Clank Entertainment Pack
PSP Limited Edition Madden NFL 09 Entertainment Pack
PSP 3000 Core Pack

That first one in your 'Good' list you may want to scratch. That is, if you are talking about the piano black slim as some of those are newer ones sony mixed into circulation and are not moddable at the moment.
The rest of your list looks good though. I have the red slim (GoW bundle) myself, and it is fine. You probably wont find too many new fat psp's for sale anymore, at least not in retail-you may find some on eBay or amazon though if you are lucky.
