Is it safe to install a game to your hard drive, then burn a backup game, and play it off that? I'd assume it wouldn't work but I'm curious.

yes it will work, IF you have a flashed xbox.
otherwise the xbox will think its a normal movie-dvd and display that message "Please play this in a Xbox 360 console, blah blah blah"
