dbox channels - please help!

hi all,

i posted a question yesterday for the first time and got a response less than a day later therefore I thought I would try my luck again. I have a dbox but my friend set it up. Anytime I've had a problem with it I take it to his and he plugs it into his computer and copies images or something. I actually have no clue how to do this myself at all. He has recently moved countries and I have recently bought a laptop. I guess my questions are:

-where to start if all my channels get deleted?

what wire do I get to connect to dbox from laptop and where to plug in to dbox and laptop?

-Channels are added naturally every once in a while, for example sky1, sky news and sky sports news, however is there a way for me to try to manually add channels that aren't there? for example my wife is polish, is there a way to get a polish channel? or all the sky channels? the box has also recently added one sky box office channel that repeats the same movie over and over. My overall question is how to access other channels?

-I'm a bit clueless to all of this and if the dbox starts messing up and clear the channels i'm unsure of what the hell to do, advice in basic language for a beginner in this would be greatly appreciated. the laptop i have is a toshiba with windows vista if that's any help.
