You can convert it to an AVI for example.

If you have Nero, that will work also to convert to AVI or mp4. There are also some guides here on AD( for Autogk for example).

ok......I think I have figured part of it out...I am using DVDx2.3 to convert from DVD to Divx....I am at the end of the process, when I get an error message stating: video codec not selected...what does that mean?

I am not familiar with that software. Maybe you did not choose what codec to use( for example Divx vs. Xvid).

1. rip/backup your dvd into an ISO, if the the dvd is not encryted no need to rip.
2. use the free fairuse wizard lite to convert your ISO to AVI (xvid). Fairuse has all the encoders built-in. It only works with ISO, it will even convert an unencryted dvd directly from the DVD rom.
3. Once you have the xvid file you can use avidemux to convert it to a FLV (which is the type of file youtube requires). Aviddemux has an "auto" selection just for FLV. With avidemux you can cutout just the sections you need.
