I was using ConvertXtoDVD 2(I think) and when I added a avi film into the program (around 1.4GB) it gave me a DVD at about 4.5GB.

The problem started all of a sudden, I've uprated to ConvertXtodvd 3 and now the program is only giving me a DVD film (disc) of about 2-2.5GB. So my question is why?

It's not the input size in GB that's relevant,
but the running time in minutes.

Is this 1 minute 25 seconds? Or 1 hour 25 minutes?

If it's 1 hour 25 minutes, you should expect it to fill the DVD.
Check the bit rate chosen (or defaulted to) in the convertxtodvd
program.

Doesn't the program create a log file?
If you peruse it, at least you'll be able to find out what it used.

I would look in the video and/or title settings for the bitrate.
I can't tell you anything more specific, since I don't have it
installed.

There is no Bitrate setting in ConvertXtoDVD, wish there was, just the quality setting. It encodes to a max of 9800 to fill the DVD but my encode's seem to be around 5500 resulting in a DVD under 4 G, nowhere as low as your's but could be larger. Maybe quality can't be improved on by a higher Bitrate in my case but 1.86 G is definitely an issue. Maybe a reinstall would help but I doubt it, v 3 here too, checking the log is a good idea, never even thought of it. By the way, a standalone converter where I can set the Bitrate is accurate on these files.

DVD Flick has an option for bitrate setting. Don't know how useful is though, I think on "automatic" the programs select the optimal bitrate to achieve maximum quality using the space available

There is only so much you can squeeze out of a quality compromised Xvid. If starting from a pristine original source the higher the bitrate the better. But with an Xvid it seems that 4X the original bitrate is more than enough to get all the quality that's possible. Hence a 1 hr 40 min Xvid with a bitrate of 990 should look identical with a DVD bitrate of 4000 kb/s vs. a blank filling 5800 kb/s one.

Well of course. They are aiming to keep the average bitrate at where you set it. CXD is trying to ascertain what the bitrate should be based on need, according to the complexity of the scene, hence very low action movies would end up smaller as there is no reason to go to a higher bitrate.

I agree that 1.86GB seems too small but it might just a anomaly based on that one file. No software is perfect.

The funny thing is its every avi I use and doesn't change when I change the setting from 'medium' to 'high' encoding.

It used to work fine before I reinstalled my XP and month or two, I have tried version 2 & 3 but with the same effect.

The output file gets larger depending on the length of avi but to no where near the 4.5gd that is should be

Just done the same file with Nero Vision and the end product is a 4.93gb DVD, that takes hours to do though, convert used to be easy, fast and good. Not sure what happened

By any chance, do you have a conversion log that ConvetxtoDVD generates? I am not sure where it is saved, I do not use the software.

Your log contains this line:
27/11/2008 21:23:34 warning 25555 frames dropped

There is probably something wrong with the source file,
and/or CnvXtodvd's ability to read it.

At this point, probably best to consult the program authors:

I found a similar problem here, but it doesn't seem to be the cause in your case from what the log says :

Hello -
I downloaded and installed the current trial (Version. 3.30).
When I set the quality to "high" it much more closely followed
the stated "average" bitrate as mentioned on this line:
Video bitrate 0/6836/8808 Kbps (min/avg/max).

Thus, almost the whole DVD was used, for a 1 hour 20 minute project.
Give this new version a try - perhaps something has been fixed.

If you want to persist with V2, examine the log closely.
Looked for dropped frames, average bitrate, the q setting
and other anomalies:
"Output Stream#0 - Video: mpeg2video, yuv420p, 720x576, q=2-31, 6836 kb/s "

You wouldn't believe it but I did put the new version I have back on and changed the conversion to high and now I'm getting a full DVD?

I think programs just do what they want and laugh about it to each other in cyber space !!
