Mahogany,
Perhaps you haven't used the new and improved DVDShrink :-))
Download this & follow my guide -
You'll have to have Nero on your PC to get the full effect of Shrink - with Nero on board, Shrink burns automatically now.
Shrink download - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_shrink.cfm
When using DVDShrink ver. 3.1.6 Beta 2
Before I start, I create a folder on my Desktop (i.e. All DVD Work) in that, I create a sub-folder with my movie?s name on it (i.e. All DVD Work/Pirates of the Caribbean) that?s where I put my work, where I can always find it later.
When using DVDShrink, after inserting your DVD, open Shrink, click ?Open Disk?. Then, ?Select DVD Drive? and click ?OK?. After Shrink has opened your disc, anywhere from 30 seconds to 1 ½ minutes you?ll see the size of the disc at the bar at the top of the page. If you have a Green bar with a little Gray at the top of the page, go to the next paragraph:-) If you see some ?Red?, simply check off those files you don?t want, I.E. Outer Mongolian or Eastern Himalayan Yak language, Director?s commentary or extra audio files ? I keep ACS 2ch or ACS 5.1, that will give you stereo, most of the rest you can trash. Only do that if you need to lose some stuff to make it fit. You can also gain more room by clicking ?Custom Ratio? and increasing the compression.
Personally, I compress until I see about 1/8 of an inch of Gray at the end of my Green bar - that way I?m not writing to the very edge of my DVD disc. - Remember, more compression, a tiny bit less on the picture quality ? when I say ?less quality? I?m speaking of theoretically less, nothing you can really see with the naked eye for the most part.
With that being done, let?s make sure that the box which says ?Full Disk? is depressed (No need to cheer it up, it likes being depressed :-). When you are ready to go, - -> click ?Backup?. When the Backup box opens, under ?Target Device? make sure your DVD Burner is listed in the window. Under ?Target folder?, make sure the folder you made at the beginning with the movie?s name is there (that way you can always go back and burn another copy in the future). Now click ?OK?.
Last step: ?STEP AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER !? Clear your throat and yell, ?Burn Baby Burn ! ? ?Let me hear you say it, Who?s your Daddy Now ???? Do not fold, spindle, mutilate, molest nor fondle the keyboard. ?GO AWAY !? Ms. Computer will let you know when she is finished, to approach her before then may be a hazardous to your health -
Really, let it alone, go call your Mom, she misses you and would love to hear from you - your backup will be ready shortly, honest :-)
Enjoy your backup,
?P?

dvd shrink takes longer but has ALOT better quality- and it gets even better if you use it to cut out extras and foriegn languages and stuff
the reason you cant copy it is CORRupt data- use CD Check to fix it

I bought DVD X COPY PLATINUM and until I got what I call the "last and final update" I couldn't get it to work. I finally burned a DVD last night successfully. I wanted to see the dreaded 321studios warning screen. Between the two, I know DVDSHRINK is the better program. Because I have two dvd drives, I can burn two DVDs to my harddrive at the same time and burn them to a DVD later. Because I have a slower machine this means I can go to bed and have them done in the morning. Also, I really like the DVDSHRINK interface. I am a programmer and I can tell you it is a much better interface than DVD X COPY. If you think about it what did 321studios gain by all there anti-piracy protection. All they did was cost themselves sales. They put the warning screen, put your license number on the DVD, prevented you from making a copy of a copy and kept the encryption. The judge didn't care about any of that; he still ordered them to stop selling the product in 7 days. It is funny, I spent $119.00 for a product that will have no future updates while the free dvdshrink will still have updates. To be honest the judge was going after the wrong people and the MPPA will pay the price in the future.

How much does the quality of the finished product differ (using dvd shrink) from using the "deep analysis before backup" (in the backup options tab) and not using it? I know enabling this will increase the total time required to burn a backup by a lot.

heres what i do- if i dont have to shrink to less than 75% i leave deep analysis off and its fine- but when it dips below that i turn it on- it realy does make a difference- ESPECIALY in longer movies- i copy anime series that are normaly on 3 discs onto 3 dvdrs (thats about 4:30 on one DVD!) i wanted to get it done fast so i did not turn on deep analysis- it came out like crap- LOOKED LIKE A VCD (but thats because it was heavily compressed- like below %50)- but i reburned it with deep analysis and the quality was NOTICIBLY improved- it looked almost like the origional. My suggestion is if the movie is longer than 2 hours- use Deep Anyalsis- if not- dont use it- if you want the extras you better turn it on to

pa104inf,
You can still make a copy from a copy - just use Nero disc to disc.
You can't get rid of that "stamp" (your license number on the copy), but thank goodness we can get rid of that warning screen with 321Gone :-)
pcshateme,
Quote: My suggestion is if the movie is longer than 2 hours- use Deep Analysis- if not- dont use it-
I wouldn't go that far as to put a time on it - I would suggest that if you want to make a decent backup, use "Deep Analysis".
Reasoning: Not all DVD's are of digital quality and to use it will result in a far superior image. Spend the time, it's worth it.
That's my opinion :D

well if the movie only has to be shrunk like %5-15 it realy doesnt matter- what i usualy do is only have just the movie- cut out the credits- and then turn of the subtitles and have only the english surround audio. (cause most of the extras are crap- if i want them i usualy put them on a minDVD (cd) separately.) after that if the movie is still going to have to be compressed more than like 80-75% i put on deep analysis- but i guess what ever works for you- works for you. Just experiment with it for a while
and Nero wont do a 1:1 copy of an xcopy disc- xcopy reencrypts the disc so it would be like trying to do a 1:1 copy of a production disc- wich is impossible without decrpytion

pcshateme,
I always did it with Nero, disc to disc. Now I got the original, DVD XCopy, and then when Xpress came out they gave me that too - I don't have all the other programs they came out with - by that time I had moved on -
To be fair though, I'll do Matrix Reloaded this weekend and see how that works - I guarantee that I can back up version 2.5.1 and then copy it but, I'll try version 3.2.1, the latest I have (I don't think I ever tried it). I have kept separate every version that came out - I like the idea of having a backup in case a new one had bugs in it :-)

Scubapete,
I always get a coaster after ripping matrix reloaded at 26%. (got coaster with SmartRipper, DVD decrytor and DVD Shrink)
I can play him normally on my Lg DVD-rom and my brand new Plextor PX-708A , but i still get coaster on both of them, very strange. In the past i have ripped the same disc twice, but now it will not rip. I also checked the disc for scratches or cracks, but it's all good. Plays well in my stand alone dvd player (panasonic rv32).
Can use some friendly advice
cheers,
Bigi

Bigi,
I don't use SmartRipper UNLESS DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter don't work - in over 500 backups, that has happened only ONCE :-)
I have been working with Matrix Reloaded as I mentioned and here's what has happened so far this past weekend -
I successfully ripped Matrix with -
DVD Shrink Ver. 31.7 beta 4
DVD Xcopy ver. 3.0
Decrypter
AnyDVD
I was not successful with -
DVD43
DVD Xcopy ver. 3.2.1
I copied the Matrix with -
DVD Shrink ver. 3.1.7 beta 4
DVD Xcopy ver. 3.0
CloneDVD
DVD2One
Have but didn?t try -
Nero Recode2
SmartRipper
ImgTool

to the OP:
Are you having problems during the ripping or the burning? I have dvdshrink, burned several movies, and got to runaway jury and it failed during the rip at around 45% with a "cyclic error". I took it back and got another copy and got the same error on this new disc at about 49%. Didn't try the first disc in the dvd player, but did try it on the puter's drive, and it gave me the same error when it got about 1/3 of the way through the movie. Same with the second disc in the puters dvd drive.
The second disc played all the way through on the standalone dvd player, though.
Has anyone successfully ripped this movie?

slanted, Welcome to our Club,
Quote: I have dvdshrink, burned several movies, and got to runaway jury and it failed during the rip at around 45% with a "cyclic error".
A "Cyclic error" indicates that there is something wrong with the disc. A good cleaning can generally help unless the media is scratched. Poor quality media being used as a backup can also result in a "Cyclic error" being reported -
We'll not delve into your difficulty too deeply as your post -

suggests that we shouldn't be discussing it at all.
We are all pleased that your regular use of DVD Shrink seems to be going well :-)

Could a dirty drive be reporting this as well, for some reason. As I stated before, both discs, different %'s of completion before failure. Further, both new discs, as they were both fresh from the packaging? I never made it to the burn process, all failed in the backup process, so the brand of media I use shouldn't be an issue.

My apologies if I sounded like it was anything but on the up and up. I purchased runaway jury, I returned it, because like I said in my post, it wouldn't burn to dvdr nor would it play on my computer's dvd drive. Having kids in the house I got the dvd drive to literally backup the discs, allowing me to save a heart attack every time they get to handling the $15-$20 originals, which can now be safely stored away.
I'll run a cleaning disc through my drive and see what comes of it.
Thanks for all the help.

Not a problem... I understand the touchy ground :)
I ran another movie through and successfully ripped and burned, but am still having problems with runaway jury...
Odd.
Has anyone gotten runaway jury to rip properly?
