I have two two dvd movies from the video hire store which i`m trying to play in my computer burner. One is very choppy and not worthwhile trying to watch it. The other is pretty good only a very slight chop now and then. There is only very slight scratches on them both and in not bad condition. Other dvd movies of mine play with no problem chopping at all in the computer burner. Both of the video hire store dvd movies i mentioned first play great in the stand alone dvd player throught to the tv. Any theories about this? Thank You

You say the DVDs play okay in your standalone DVD player but choppy in your computer, and the DVDs have minor scratches/damages. The DVD drive in your PC is probably more sensitive to read errors than your standalone; that's why many damaged discs or bad burns are okay to be played on a standalone, however, can be impossible to rip on a PC due to read errors( a very efficient free copy protection I'd say!). That would be my theory.

Don't know if that's the truth, but that is my take on it :). I had a standalone DVD player- a Sanyo DVD/VCR combo that would not play certain original DVDs, the video would be choppy and then freeze at some point, and same DVDs would play in an Apex standalone with no problem. Probably the latter had a "better" laser, less sensitive to errors.
