Problem playing avi files on USB stick via port on dvd player

I am having mega problems playing avi, divx, xvid files via the usb port on my portable dvd player. When i input the usb stick i get an error message saying unsupported format, i did manage to get 2 films playing but with most i get this error message. The films play ok when i burn the files to disk. The dvd player came from Hong Kong. Anyone have any solution to solve this.
