How can I tell if a psp is a ta88v3 without opening the box. My little brother is getting a psp soon and wants custom firmware. So my question is, is it possible?

My PSP firmware history:
PSP SLim 3.60>3.71>3.80>LOST!>FOUND>3.90>3.93>3.95>3.71m33>3.90m33-3>3.95GEN-2

Maybe do some research on the box sets they were doing over this summer. The God of War, Daxter, and Star Wars psp packages didn't have the 088v3 boards. So if you can look them up on a site that has them backstocked (i'd try amazon.com first), get one of those. :)

You know I give you the mad, phat, superfly, stupid-dope, dumb-ass, retarded, bomb-sh*t props!
What else do you want from me!?!

The ones that were released in mid-2008 are the ones you will probably want to avoid. This includes the blue madden pack psp, and a good deal of the piano black core systems. Although, I have seen some blue madden psp's that have been modded-There really isnt any way to check like you could before with the fat psp's aside from the date on the package.

Your best bets are like NeonMako said-look for the Daxter(Silver),God Of War (Red), or the Star Wars (White) bundles.

Alternatively, you could check craigslist for a good used one that has already been modded-that will save you some hassle as well.

Does this help...

Quote:
Here's some information that can help (taken from Maxconsole). This will help you judge what version the PSP is by looking at the retail box. Some of it is still not absolute, so buyer beware... but this is all the information known at the present. It's separated by the package style:

PSP-2000 Motherboard Information:
TA-85 (Can use and make Pandora Battery)
TA-85v2 (Can use, but cannot make Pandora Battery)
TA-88v2 (Can use, but cannot make Pandora Battery)
TA-88v3 (Cannot use or make Pandora Battery)

Limited Edition & New Boxstyle:
Daxter Limited Edition Pack (TA-85v2/3.71 OFW)(CONFIRMED)
God of War Limited Edition Pack
(TA-88v2/3.95 OFW)(CONFIRMED)
Madden 09 Limited Edition Pack
(TA-88v2/3.95 OFW & TA-88v3/4.01 OFW)(CONFIRMED)
Piano Black with the New Box Style
(TA-88v3)(UNCONFIRMED)
Piano Black (Amazon.com)
(TA-88v3)(PARTIALLY CONFIRMED)

PSP-2000 Original Boxstyle Box Codes (Thanks to Alek @ Dark-AleX.org):
(No Letter) = 3.60
A = 3.71
B = UNKNOWN
C = 3.72
D = UNKNOWN
E = 3.80
F = 3.90
G = 3.95 / 4.01 (TA-88v2 / TA-88v3) BUT
A PSP with G and the 4.01 firmware is most likely a TA-88v3 motherboard, so it is advised that you stay away from them.

pspident won't work on official firmware. you need custom firmware already to run it.

if the letter detection is accurate, you can use that. otherwise, you have to open the box and check the system software.

ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd
(+[__]%) psp slim ta-085v1: 6.60 PRO B10
wii (powered by bootmii/priiloader): 4.1u - d2x v10beta53-alt (base 56) - configurable usb loader v70r51/devolution r188 - wd scorpio black 7200rpm 320gig w/ ams venus ds2 enclosure

got a whole lot more to list . . .

Thank You everyone. My brother got his psp on the 2nd and we all thought it was a ta88v3. I ran the ta88v3 identifier and found it wasn't. Now he's enjoying 5.00M33-4

My PSP firmware history:
PSP SLim 3.60>3.71>3.80>LOST!>FOUND>3.90>3.93>3.95>3.71m33>3.90m33-3>3.95GEN-2

Can you describe the packaging of your brother's PSP? I am trying to figure out the same thing with unopened PSP Slim Core models. Here's what I have, trying to figure out which to open:

I've been searching around google to figure this out, but getting unclear/conflicting info. Bought 2 new PSP piano black core slims, am I SOL on the cfw? Both boxes: serial # starts with AB, model is 2001PB/98510, UPC #7 11719 85100 4, packaging says copyright 2007.

One from Meijer has clear plastic window on the box that shows the actual PSP inside and the Playstation Logo is in color in the right hand corner. This box is slightly smaller than the second one.

Another one from Buy.com that doesn't show the PSP from the outside (just a glossy actual sized picture on solid cardboard) and the Playstation Logo is in black and white in the right hand corner. Pictures and logos are all raised on the cardboard box. There is an extra logo in the bottom left corner saying PSP-2000 series that the Meijer one does not have.

Any help would be appreciated, hope to figure out if they are the dreaded TA-088v3 motherboard before I crack one open.

You're not necessarily out of luck. But there's a good chance you're out of luck for the time being.

I do believe a good chunk of the piano blacks are using the TA-088v3's.

As I just posted on another thread...the TA-088v3's are NOT unhackable. People need time to figure it out. It's a puzzle. Eventually someone will find the right answer and when that happens CFW will be installable on the 088v3's.

As a matter of fact there's been 2 things going on with the new mobos.
1)Datel claimed they have one that can get past the IPL, however Dark AleX was less then convinced by their claim. I've yet to hear anything else from them.
2)Another hacker (his name is escaping me right now) has claimed to have made progress into it but hasn't confirmed it as being hacked.

Just be patient. It's nothing more then a matter of time. Till then you'll just have to enjoy your psp games :P

Yeah, I heard about BrokenCodes decrypting partial code with Dark Alex saying that this is the first step. I just hope they figure both the TA88v3 and the TA90s for the community's sake (and mine).

To my knowledge the architecture of both are the same. They crack one they've cracked them both.

That was my understanding when I read up on it however I may have misinterpreted it.

PSP 3000's are NOT unhackable (as of this post). I haven't heard or seen anything about a hacked 3000.

If you srsly you want a model you can put CFW on then go for the ones released this summer that I mentioned earlier in the post.

I did an amazon search and all 3 of aforementioned PSPs are still available for purchase, both new and used.

I, personally, have the Kratos Red one and it's been awesome. Yet to have a problem with it.

On a side note, when the 088v3's are hacked I'm probably going to get a piano black. They look too sexy to pass up :-D

***Edit***I totally said they WERE hackable and they are not. My bad on that typo. Sometimes what you're thinking isn't what you type :P

Why dont you just swap cases if its just the casing you're interested in. You can find cases on coolmods.co.uk

Staxx, this is why you're a senior member and i'm not.

The simplest answers seem to always be the ones that evade me :P I hadn't even considered a case swap.

My hat is off to you sir.

Hi i just joined this board today. Anyway you said that the Daxter motherboards were TA85v2. I bought that one in 2007 when they were released. I got mine in october. I have tried many different programs to make pandora batterys with the computer with the battery that came with the slim. None of the programs worked. it said the game data is corrupted and can not be played. Do you think you could help me
