I'm not to familiar with converting movie formats, mostly I've 'Converted' movies from original discs, not from downloaded files. Tools used were RipIt4Me, DVD Decrypter/DVD Fab Platinum, VOB Cleaner, Srink 3.2, Image burn::: or previously, any of the other ' 1 Click ' methods.
So, I'm familiar with .VOB files, know that they make DVD's that are playable on stand-alone players, and as far as I'm aware, the .avi format does not make a DVD player compatible piece of media. ( VCD??? never tried it)
SO here's the run down and you may be able to point me in the right direction::
I have a 1.54GB music file, stated by the uploader to be in xVid format; turned out to be .avi.Movie play-time is 2 hrs, 19 minutes.
I used TuneBite Converter Platinum v.5.0.355.30 (equipped with LAME 3.98.2 Codecs) to convert movie format to Xvid 2048kbs. Took ages and end result is a file that still says its in .avi format, complete with the colourful Hot Air Balloon pic. The file size ia still 1.54GB. Cool so far??
Unhappy with this result, I then used 'Power Video Converter 1.5.57 to convert it to MPEG2 DVD(PAL). This took mega- ages to finish.
Opened the created folder and in there are 3 sub folders. ALl have the name of the music movie, but Audio is in one of them, A soundless movie of some 4GB in the other, that plays the full 2hours 14minutes, and the third folder contains a 2GB file , that has sound but only plays for 39minutes.
Also, the on-screen pic ( on computer played in Windows Media Player 11)) is only about 3x2 inches in size. No way can I make it go full screen or any other option in between.
I have never used TuneBite or Power Vid Converter before, as I said earlier.
So dear folks, what have I not done to produce a burnable DVD to disc???
Conversely, what have I done to screw up.

I have just loaded the said file ( from the first conversion ie: .avi-> Xvid 2480kbs)into Prism DVD Converter to check it out and am being told the following in the 'Information'column:: Codec XVID MPEG-4; Resolution: 312x234: Framerate: 25.
This file will play the full 2hrs-14 mins and is full screen playable.
I'm going to burn it to a TDK DVD-R (DVD5) and see if it plays back on stand alone DVD player.Earlier today I was told that Xvid &/or DivX will not play on some modern DVD Players:: strange I thought , I seen many DVD Players with these formats stated playable on the facia plate. I'll give it a spin, nothing to lose.
My post here as brought up links to previous questions in the same vein as mine, they are going to be helpfull.
Still, I will appreciate anyones replies on my 'Q'. Can only learn from it, eh.
Cheers

Avi is a container for the compressed video, XVID is the codec used. 90% of avi are XVID. You can get a player that let's you play avi (XVID, DIVX) burned as data. Not familiar with either of the program's you have but DVD Flick should be fine and either burn a DVD or give you an iso to burn: http://www.dvdflick.net/ Has good quality and speed as I understand it and is free.

--Why?!!! Xvid to Xvid?

If your standalone player is capable of Divx playback, you just burn your original file to a DVD and play it, no conversion.
If your player is not Divx certified, then like suggested, convert the movie to a DVD with DVD Flick for example.

I have just checked out the first conversion ( .avi-> Xvid )by loading it into Prism Converter ( hoping to further corrupt the file-hee hee :[) and the info given on the file is::- Codec XVID MPGE-4; Resolution: 312x234; Framerate: 25
Two hours later, play it on the com using Windows Media Player 11 and it is great to watch, but just when Slash is getting into a stand alone solo, that's it folks---movie stops playing. 1 hour short of the stated time of 2hr 14 min. Maybe I have screwed it.
Get it again if that is the case.

Mistycat and cyprusrom
Thanks, I will look into links to the programs you mentioned and try them out.
I didn't know avi is DivX or Xdiv, as I said, it's new to me even though they both been about for some time.
Thanks again.
now,to find the lost hour of movie. To make space on com I deleted original D-Load. ( groan) Dunno if I'll get it back with 'Recuva' but I'm going to go have a look see if its there & recoverable. :)

If you don't have the original, the file resulted after you "converted" to Xvid again, that will do also, if you have it.

cypruscom, That's a very good good point. Usually I do a copy of the original file/ folder and do any changes to that, Not this time though.I did have a lookfor itin two of five partitions but had decided it best not bothered with and set about getting the movie afresh.
Shouldn't be any trouble putting it to disc now that I have a bit of knowledge about the .avi and Xvid format and some good links on the subject located in other posts here in the Forum.
Thanks for your help.

Well I'm back albeit three and a half months later. just want to add here that the Stones RnR Circus disc that I tried to copy definitely was scratched, they were those fine abrassions type of things that , how could I best put it, that take the shine from the DVD surface, french polishing gone wrong. As it is a Dual Layer DVD disc I guess that 'fine' scratching / misting of the disc surface would be fatal. More tests that I did using disc checking software programs and the common sense to deduct that the results of the tests weighed off against the time of occurrences was a constant happening time & place.
End of that story.
I have just recently (its jan. 24 2009 now)posted another thread about this Rock n Roll Circus but this time it is about the .avi container that it came in when I d-loaded it off the net a week back. Its all about .avi, DivX, Xvid, and my complete ignorance of the format and subject. Found here:-

Thanks for all your help.
