I'm looking for an awesome camera for around $400 or under. The last camera I had was the olympus 720sw. it was water proof and shock proof. That thing was built solid. Sadly it got stolen when I lent it to my sister so she is getting me a new camera. I am a horrible photographer, so image stabilization is a huge part of the feature set I'm looking for.

the camera I was looking at was the sony Cyber-shot DSC-W300 or the nikon COOLPIX S710.

There are so many cameras out there, its crazy. now some even have HD video modes. I think I'm in over my head.

edit.
I was reading some reviews and came across the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5. looking at the stats it holds up to the two cameras I stated above but its far cheaper. is it worth it?

here are your side by side comparisons:

the Nikon is the newer camera but there are more reviews to the Panasonic........ both are rated about the same...... the Sony camera is older and yet no reviews? hmmmmmmm. anyway..... all three cameras look good for the type of camera you want. I'm sure they are easy to use. The one thing about the Nikon: higher Mega Pixels and more ISO range. For the:

any one of these cameras should do the job.... they all have Image Stabilization.

Funny thing, they just did a piece on the local news tonight here in Detroit and Consumer Reports gave it to the Sony has the top pick.

this side by side comparison is awesome.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_..._dlux3&show=all

can anyone tell em why this leica d-lux is 1300 bucks when the specs aren't even that different from other 300 dollar cameras? Same with the sigma DP2 ?

So here is my consideration list

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_...sct700&show=all

I'm leaning towards the sony and samsung but that lumix is looking mighty fine with that HD video. what makes a camera good in low light situations, high iso or bigger sensor? from what I understand the higher the iso the blurrier the picture do to the noise reduction mechanisms built in.

can anyone look at my list and let me know which camera is the best pick out of the bunch.

your best bet is to go the stores and ask for a demo! try them out. see which one is easiest to use for what you want to do. Considering you're only spending 300-400, it's what you're comfortable with in a camera that should be your choice. Not just price or specs.

Go with the nikon COOLPIX S710, in your choices.

I would have to say the nikon.

Sony cybershots use the same nasty and expensive memory sticks the psp uses so i would recommend going sd or cf versus memory stick pro pro duo.

sorry to disagree with you AGAIN susieqbbb but to say:

nasty and expensive memory sticks
and to even base your camera pick on it is ridiculous. I have cameras with memory sticks and CF cards...... the CF cards are much more expensive than the memory sticks; and the CF cards are bigger and bulkier (which is not a reason to say that it's bad, either)! And my new Canon 5D Mark II uses the CF cards. Just because a camera uses a certain card is no basis to pick it over another camera! That's all I'm saying!

SO you guys suggest the coolpix over the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX150. they look simmilar in stats but the cool pix has better metering (i think) wich means better shots in low light. but the lumix has 720p movie mode. oh well at least I have narrowed it down to only 2 choices. I love the way the sony looks though. The thing I hate about sony is that you don't really get much bang for your buck. they make great stuff but for the same money you can get more features with almost any other electronics company. They don't know the meaning of aggressive pricing. example The ps3 is still 400 bucks.
