Believe it or not another guy came to me yesterday with a crappy Hitachi 59DJ drive, only his was giving him the dirty disk error and wasn't flashed. He also brought with him a new Samsung MS28 and wanted me to swap them out.

I've never had to swap drives or spoof firmware before so I told him I'd do it for free as long as I could keep the crappy Hitachi 59DJ dvd drive and take it out back Office Space style.

Anyways I followed the tut I linked to above and was able to flash the MS28 with a spoofed firmware that plays retail and backup games.

The question is however that I couldn't follow the tut all the way.
After I got to the step where you spoof the samsung firmware with the hitachi key to read as a hitachi drive you are suppose to go to the "12x" folder and use the "make ixtreme firmware" command. When I did that it gave me an error and said it couldn't proceed. It created a dummy ixtreme12x.bin file but the key was all f's etc.

So I used that dummy file in my backup folder on my floppy that I and figured as long as the key was correct and it was spoofed that it would only read retail games which was all the guy was wanting really. So I flashed the drive with the sam-cfw.bin that was created with fwtoolbox.

When I put in Dead Rising it played perfectly.
For shits n' grins I threw in a backup of Far Cry 2, the one I burned at 4x and lo and behold it loaded up also.

I guess what I'm trying to do is figure out if the step I wasn't able to perform really matters since the games boot up and maybe why the make ixtreme 12x firmware command didn't want to work the way it did in the tut.

If you took the time to sort through all this thanks.

Well, you had the steps right, just the wrong order. Once you created your hacked samsung FW with the Hitachi key, you take that FW and spoof it with FW Toolbox. Then flash the sammy with that FW.
