"collection" games and ESR

I have a few "collection" games (not sure of the proper title of this type of game, but ones like Namco Museum 50th Anniversary or Capcom Classics volume 1 and 2) and I am not able to get these to work with ESR. The game boots to a menu-loader asking which game you want to run (using a graphics interface) but when you choose a game, it gives you a black screen and hangs. The disk has several ".elf" files on it, but they do not load with ulaunchelf (or any other elf launcher I tried) so I am thinking these are hard coded for that specific loader ("collection" game).
Is there a way to get these games to work using only free mcboot (1.7 or 1.8b) and ESR or do I need some hardware modchip/casemod/swap magic trick? Using ps2 slim v14.
