Hello all,

first off ive followed and used this site for many years but this is my first time posting. i hope im following all the correct rules and regulations.

That said here is my issue. lately ive been having trouble getting several newer movies to shrink down small enough to fit on to a single layer dvd. im using the newest anydvd, and then dvdshrink / nero express. occasionally im using rip it for me (although ive not tried that method this time around).

Hancock is the last movie ive tried to back up. in attempting, with anydvd, and dvdshrink, i end up with a movie that is 5.7 gb. obviously this will not fit on a single layer and i cannot get it to shrink any further. the same has happened with the golden compass and several other movies.

so my question is as follows. is there another program out there that i can compress further with? or another way to make it compress smaller? or am i just SOL and stuck needing to buy a dual layer burner?

Any help is greatly appreciated!! =)

First off, is you version of Anydvd updated to the most recent version?

In Shrink did you remove all the unwanteds, i.e. additional languages, subtext, etc? Have you tried running Deep Analysis before transcoding?

For the best fit and finish, use Dvd Rebuilder to encode the movie once you're done ripping. Far better quality results.

EDIT: here's the link for the Hancock thread.

dvd rebuilder ive never used or heard of to be honest. i only know a bit about burning that ive taught myself, so any help is again greatly apprecaiated.

i do have the newest version of AnyDVD. i had no prob at all ripping it off onto the comp, its just that now its to big and i need to make it smaller.

so if i can get some n00b like instructions on how to do so with any other programs, it would be great of you guys to assist me in that regard! :)

Encoding is a better process than Transcoding especially for high compression.

The downside, is that encoding takes a bit longer to complete. DvdRebuilder is my (among many other regulars here) recommendation for best quality.

Here's a tutorial to get you started.

I'm still curious as to why your file ends up so large after ripping. Have you tried doing Movie Only?

i did not try the movie only on this one, but i did on Golden Compass and it was still a VERY large file. ive never done the encoding thing before but ill give it a shot. if it works, then hey who cares if it takes a little longer!! =)
