Either it's the media that's bad (when burned) or it's your drive. What kind of media (MID) and what's the last time you updated your firmware?

The only media I use are: YUDEN, MAXELL (MIJ Hitachi) and VERBATIM. Though I've use few/some SONY (MIT) and they're pretty good so far.

I would still recommend using the good quality media, for better burns, less trouble, and increased longevity.

Make sure your drive/burner has the latest firmware. For more info, look at those 2 links below:

MID http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/terms/mid.cfm
Media and MID http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

Not all MAXELL are made by Hitachi/MIJ, like I said I've used hundreds of them MIJ Hitachi Maxells and they're as superior as YUDEN and VERBs.

NOTE: to make sure your getting genuine media from both YUDEN and Hitachi Maxell, look for Made In Japan only.

I have a few good movies that I received already on a copy disk and my drive can't recognize the disc

What format of media were these movies burned on?

That's called OPB= Other people's backups. Veteran's like Alkyhol,7thsinger,and myself can play our backups virtually anywhere.Quality burners, quality media,no overburning, multitasking, etc. Booktype the plus format to dvd-rom for highest compatability.

Now when you're talking about other people's backups,it's a whole new ballgame. Most peeps don't know the differences between media, formats of blank media, burn as fast as possible, and what their dvd-rw drive is capable of.They are especially unaware of the compatability factor on other drives. Try telling them anything, and 99% of the time they'll laugh in your face. Huge differences between dvd-rw drives.

Best bet, tell whoever the source of your backups are: Booktype the plus format to dvd-rom, if their dvd-rw drive has that capability. If not, switch to opposite format for the backups sent to you. Example: He/She uses plus format on their drives and no problems. Now slap those jplus format backups on other people's drives, they may have a bad reaction by displaying one of the following messages: No disc,Dirty Disc,Wrong region,Wrong Format,Illegal Disc.

About your dvd-rw drive: Bad flashes can ruin drives. I'd go into device manager, uninstall drivers to that litey, reboot and see if it'll work. Sometimes they can get lost and a simple uninstall/reboot will fix it.
