I would like to get a new subwoofer to hook up to my receiver. I believe I need one that is powered because i've hooked up just a sub speaker to it once and it did nothing, it needs the amp built in i guess. I don't know much about the technical aspects of them so if someone could enlighten me on what to look for, maybe some personal recommendations as well, that would be great. I listen to metal so there is a lot going on pretty quick. I would like something that is very quick and will keep up with those kick drums and send them right through my chest. Not looking for a rumbling type sound, just very tight, quick punches that are really powerful.

If you want one of the best there is, check these out............

Even check the "B" stock, and maybe find one cheaper.
You can always get a Polk sub from Best Buy for around $200, but it's going to be boomier than the SVS.

man they're expensive haha. the cheapest one is $429 by SVS, the PB10-NSD. it has a 300 watt amp. you think that would be good enough? i can't afford anything higher than that really. if it gives me that sharp bass sound instead of this rumbling, i'll get it. that sledgehammer bass that iluvendo mention sounds like what i want but those JL's are so expensive.

Home theater gear is one place where you usually get what you pay for.

Agree with JVC, if you want maximum dynamics and quality, it's gonna be expensive.

Yeah, i don't have that kind of money though. Just out of curiosity, how much of an effect does the receiver have on the sub? Will that improve/diminish quality at all depending on the quality of the receiver and how it uses the sub?

The sub has it's own amp.
The receiver just adds the signal, in with the surround, into the LFE channel. Receiver won't make much difference, if any at all, with the actual performance quality of the sub.

As I said before.........you can get a $200 Polk Audio sub or JBL. They will be ok. Just don't expect a $200 sub to perform like a $500 sub.

Yeah maybe i'll take a look at them. I'm seeing on Best Buy that they have an 8" 300w Polk Audio, usually you can test them out there too. I would imagine something smaller would be better for my needs being that I need it to be quick.

I'm gonna take a ride to Best Buy today to check some out. Their website has a decent selection, some packing quite a bit of power. For the kind of sound i'm looking for, that "sledgehammer" pound, is there something in particular in the specs that will show whether or not the sub will produce that (low frequency response, wattage, etc...) or do i just have listen to find it?

Hi,

for that "sledge hammer bass" that my friend endo lovingly refers to

1) you will need lots of power (endo prefers >1000 watts)
2) usually in a sealed speaker cabinet
3) yes you will need to listen to the sub woofer

Another brand, that endo forgot to mention was made by HSU Research.
Please look them up on the internet.

Jo
