I have a DVD rip of a movie that I want to break down into individual clips. I am using Virtualdub. My problem is when I split the file(after specifying where I want it to start and stop) it automatically adds about 8 seconds of video from the previous split. Does anyone know of a setting to change, or what I am doing wrong? Also I am open to suggestions on different programs to use. Thanks in advance to anyone and everyone that can lend a hand.

Is this an MPEG2 file in VirtualDub (to be saved as AVI) or an already compressed AVI.

It almost sounds like the condition that you get in 'Direct Stream Copy' when a section is deleted and the end point of the cut is not on a key frame - the saved video will include the frames that were 'cut' back to the last key frame.
Depending on the distance between key frames, the extra length could be considerable (two hundred frames between key frames at 25FPS = eight seconds of video)

If this is an AVI file, it could be cut using Avidemux.
If it's VOB files it could be cut and saved as AVI.

Note that I always have problems with audio sync when using VOB files as input for Avidemux.

The file is already an .AVI file. I am just trying to cut a clip out of a bigger file and save as an additional .AVI
