flashed hitachi drive wont read backups half the time

got a flashed hitachi drive. all my backups work great at first and after a few days its a hit and miss. all backups burned using verbatim DL dvd+r with XBC. only thing i can think that has changed is that i put labels on the dvds themselves. i peeled one label off and it seemed to work better. is this a coincidence?? i dunno its seems weird. also my drive makes a ton of noise when i play backups. like the laser is always moving.

anybody got any input?
